Please tell us more. Is there any evidence that Constantine II did this during his father's lifetime? It would seem that Bruun was not aware of it if he did, since he only associates that obverse inscription to Constantine I during his lifetime (leaving IVN for his son of the same name). See footnote 261 on pages 459-460 (under Siscia) for his discussion. He says that all three sons adopted the MAX epithet after the death of their father.

BTW what do you make of RIC 381 for Arles/Constantina in 334?

I’m going to have to do some research on that, especially since I don’t have RIC to hand. I don’t have anything to offer off the top of my head, but I’d like to follow up on what’s been written. Thanks for the references.

By the way, I got the new Leu catalog (Auction 3) in the mail today. It has some nice Constantine eye candy, including a SPES PUBLIC with an estimate of 1000 Swiss francs. I wonder what it will actually go for…

Thanks for the heads up. My pre-bid is in (fat lot of good that will do me).

Roma sold this one in June for a hammer of 4000 GBP:

    Compare?

The coin you show in this post is RIC VIII #83 for Siscia. It has to be Constantine II since CTG was deceased by this time.

What is the size and weight of this coin?

I think the Leu one is nicer, though I certainly wouldn't mind having either. That's a dream coin! Good luck!

BTW, it now occurs to me that in posting that "eye candy," I have thoughtlessly violated the etiquette principle of not calling attention to specific coins in current auctions. I apologize to members of the board. I suppose a coin like that in a well-publicized auction might not remain a secret, but still, I should have been more circumspect.

Yes, I completely agree. My point in that post was that I learned of the C2 identity late in the game. For some reason I have the coin as RIC 8 Siscia 89, but I'll take another look. Size is about 15 mm. and pretty light--1.49 g.

My mistake. You are correct at #89. I had overlooked the header for the second series which specifically mentions the chi-rho in the banner. Well, duh!

But that slightly smaller module is the tipoff for the later issues.
