I do not disapprove of collecting sets but only buying coins that you do not want because you think you should buy to advance a set. I will not be the first to complete a set of all the emperors because I seem to be attracted to some of them more than to others. I do not need a Didia Clara or more than I do ten more different Julia Domnas. I recognize that most people disagree of the prices would not be as they are. I do tire of people, mostly dealers, who tell me that a coin is common junk when the fact remains that they have never seen one before and would not recognize it if they did.
I enjoy what i collect and purchase what appeals to me and is within my budget at that time---and that includes the more inexpensive 'common' types to the more scarce and rare beauties that I've always hungered after. Two examples I have are of a votive wreath reverse and the 'common' Falling Horseman type...and I will be looking into purchasing better grade examples with differing reverses and mints in the months and years to come---assuming I have that long LOL Hmmm, the fotos are less than terrific---Well, back to more practice...
that's some good lookin' LRB MZ. i think bot of those might clean up a bit of you're so inclined, but if not...they're fine the way they are. my collecting strategy (or lack of one) is pretty much the same as yours.
Well, that's good that you don't disapprove of collecting sets. Sometimes that's an advantage when a dealer says a coin is common and the variety is not, so it's possible to get it for cheaper. Sometimes I get the impression that people use the RIC rarity ratings to jack up the prices on coins. I've never been to a coin show or talked to dealers face to face, so I don't really know how all that works out when talking to them about coins.
I seem to have my randomness down to an disorganized science ....... => animals, weapons, chicks & ships!! ... well actually, any miscellaneous cool bobble that catches my eye (oh, and red wine definitely seems to keep the randomness in check) QED
