As has been pointed out, the 'Rarity' scale is not to be believed because the one in RIC is a hundred years old (app.) and since then many 'hoards' have been found. If my recollection is correct it may have been 'Scarce' (which is less than Rare).
I missed this thread, so I will post a little late and hopefully answer one question asked. The RIC rarity scales are relatively meaningless. When those references were put together they largely took population data from museum collections only. Not the market itself, nor private collections. So, the information is somewhat skewed, though it can sometimes give us a good idea. And true, as already pointed out, rarity means nothing without demand. I've had many unique coins in my career, most either sell the same as others or sometimes a bit more.
