Silvered bronze coin (AE Follis) minted at SMH7=Heraclea during the reign of LICINIUS I, for his Son, LICINIUS II, as Caesar, between 318-320 A.D. Obv. D.N.VAL.LICIN.LICINVS.NOB. C. laur. and dr. bust r., globe & sceptre in r. hand, mappa in l. hand. Rev. PROVIDEN-TIAE.CAESS. Camp gate surmounted with three turrets & no doors, 6 stone layers, lambda in r. field. RICVII #49 pg.547. Purchased from Victor Clark in 2019. My favorite campgate.
Here's the only Constantine campgate that currently resides in my collection; I received this example as a Christmas gift last year from a particularly close relative of mine. Constantine AE3 Follis, Antioch 326 A.D. Obverse: CONSTANTINVS AVG, laureate head right. Reverse: PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG, campgate, two turrets, star above. Mintmark: SMANTΓ Diameter: 18mm Weight: 3.50g RIC VII 71
Two of my favorite campgates...which I've shown more than once already. Maximinus II, as Caesar, BI Nummus. Cyzicus, circa AD 308. GAL VAL MAXIMINVS NOB CAES, laureate head right / VIRTVS MILITVM, four-turreted camp gate with raised portcullis; MKΓ in exergue. RIC 40. 6.05g, 26mm, 12h. Valens, (AD 364-378). AE2 (22mm, 4.43 gm, 5h). Trier, AD 367-375. D N VALEN-S P F AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Valens right, seen from front / GLORI-A ROMA-NORVM, campgate with six rows, two turrets, no doors; S above, SMTR in exergue. RIC IX 29b.
That's an impressive number of layers, @Victor_Clark! I notice that the one with the second most layers shown in the thread so far - Bing's - is also a Siscia issue. It seems the die engravers there tried to outdo themselves when it came to layering their campgates? Best I can do is this 11-layer example from Antioch. CONSTANTINE I AE3. 3.98g, 19mm. Antioch mint, AD 331-333/334, 5th Officina. RIC VII Antioch 81. O: CONSTAN-TINVS AVG, rosette-diademed head right. R: PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG, campgate with 11 layers, 2 turrets and star inbetween, pellet in doorway; SMANTЄ in exergue. At the other end of the scale, here's a Valentinian II campgate with 4 layers. VALENTINIAN II AE4. 0.79g, 12mm. Thessalonica mint, AD 384-388. RIC IX 62a.2; LRBC 1864. O: D N VALENTIN[IANVS P F AVG], pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. R: GLORIA REI-[PVB]LCE, campgate with four layers, no doors and two turrets; A in left field, TES in exergue. Ex Terence Cheesman (“Maple Leaf”) Collection
10 rows on Constantine II, but with the bonus crenellations on top. 4 miserable rows on Arcadius, with the middle row barely even formed, just the hint of a row.
Wow, this one above is really special for both the bust type and the reverse depiction of the camp gate. Here is one with many (I counted 11) rows from my collection: And another one with open gates:
I had the opportunity to buy a small collection of Arles campgates recently and ended up with this lot..... a mix of issues and a mix of open doors / no doors. Most have the standard 6 rows of bricks but one has 11.
Whadaya mean "could"? Wow, this thread has resulted in some seriously nice campgates! I'm saving this thread!
These are my favorite camp gate coins from my collection. Not because of the camp gates, but because of the portraits:
I don't focus on campgates but have bought many over the years almost through osmosis. This Thessalonica came from a mixed lot.... The mottled silver on this Antioch makes it look worse than it does in hand And just a random Alexandria
campgate overload in this thread! here's a fairly recent addition with a dot in the archway...perhaps merely a centering dot. Nicely silvered-- Constantine I A.D. 326-327 19mm 3.4g CONSTAN-TINVS AVG; Laureate head right. PROVIDEN-TIAE AVGG; camp gate, two turrets, no doors, • in archway, ✶ above; in left field A. in ex. CONS RIC VII Constantinople 7
Nice coin @Victor_Clark and a whole lot of other nice ones posted here. The most amount of layers in my collection is 11 and then a 10 layer. Here they are.
