All the sports that I like have something that I end up collecting. I played golf and started collecting golf balls. I started fishing and started collecting lures. I play chess and started collecting chess sets.
So I guess your right sports does have something in common with coin collecting.

Coin collecting came to me 6 years ago, when I had to leave my job due to health. In my situation I really have focus on a coin, errors, filled mint marks, Reading research books on coins etc. reallt takes it out of me.
just wish I could use a digital camera to shoot pictures , but it never turns out LOL
I look at things so much LOL that my eye with the transplant gets so blurry I have to lie down for awhile.
I'm not complaining, just commenting if you like something you will do almost anything to improve,
the family ask me why I punish myself doing this , I reply it relaxes me it is not punishment.
I figure I could set around with beer cans and cigartette packs lying around but this great past time is what keeps alot of us going day to day.

coins can be take up a lot of time, if you really get down to grading and taking pictures..

I may be different but I can relax and sort coin's, I can't relax if I got to complete something..:)

Yes, there are different levels of collecting. The level that relaxes me before bed is reading coin magazines before bed. (I even have numismatic dreams at times!)

YES I am also dreaming day by day of reality that this dream will be coming soon...specially the rare coin that I have keep for over a decade and half is a legitimate one and do not see any duplicate of this unique coin...
And I can say again.... Dream can be broken but every pieces can put it together....

    dose stacking coins mark them.?

It can certainly rub down the high points of a coin. Instead of stacking them, I would suggest placing the coins in 2x2 coin flips, air tights, or albums.
