[QUOTE="Marsyas Mike, post: 5134129, member: 85693"]Commodus is one of my favorite collecting areas, and I just got my first dupondius - a denomination that seems a bit scarce for this emperor, at least in the "budget" market.

Although it is in poor condition, I did not think I would have much trouble attributing it, but I am. Here is what I have found:

1. Annona standing dupondii come in two basic types - one with the obverse legend starting: M COMMODVS or M ANTONINVS

2. OCRE has only one dupondius for Commodus with Annona standing, the M ANTONINUS-first type. RIC 334. The type starting with M COMMODVS does not show up - does this mean it is not in RIC?

http://numismatics.org/ocre/results?q=deity_facet:"Annona"+AND+denomination_facet:"Dupondius"+AND+portrait_facet:"Commodus"

3. Although not in OCRE, I found an example like mine starting with M COMMODVS. This is attributed as RIC 334, the M ANTONINVS-first type. This is incorrect - it even notes ANTONINVS starting the legend, which clearly does not match the photo. This single example shows up several times in acsearch and Vcoins is ex-Ken Dorney - here is the Vcoin listing - the description and the photo clearly do not match:

https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/ken_dorney/52/product/commodus_177__192_ad_dupondius_annona/1150837/Default.aspx

4. OCRE has only one dupondius for Commodus with Annona standing, the M ANTONINUS-first type. RIC 334. The type starting with M COMMODVS does not show up - does this mean it is not in RIC?
