I would have a problem with 36 as my understanding is this is no longer a commemorative type issue, but general issue and should thus represent the Union at the time of minting. This also means that if Puerto Rico, DC, or any other district or commonwealth enters the Union, then the design should be changed to demonstrate such. As a commemorative, 36 would most definitely be appropriate.

With regards to space restrictions, that simply means that the design is not feasible...period. A design that is not feasible for production should never had left the concept stage, much less make it into consideration. The moment size restrictions made the proposed design non-feasible, it should have been dropped.

DOES NOT MATTER...WE HAVE 50 STATES NOW! And those 50 stars, need to be on the flag, if not, and this coin looks like that, if circulated, and struck, it is a disgrace to America

I totally disagree. There are plenty of instances where 13 stars and/or stripes are used to signify the 13 colonies that became the first states. There are 13 stripes on the American flag. There are 13 stars on the SBA dollar obverse. That's a mighty strange definition you have of "disgrace".

We can symbolize the 13 colonies all we want, and we can do that by using the 13 STRIPES ON THE FLAG! That is fine with me! But we need 50 STARS for 50 states, and 13 stripes for 13 colonies...
To me, this year is the only year that we need to remember and commemorate Lincoln, there is no reason for lessening the number of stars on the flag, just to commemorate lincoln, for another year. 50 Stars, and 13 Stripes is how it should be

I'm glad they aren't recommending to put a numerical 1 and a cent sign.

However, the stars and stripes are not used specifically as a flag in those instances. Stars alone can be significant of a number of different things including States. The stars on the flag signify one thing only...the States within the Union.

The SBA dollar has 13 stars. We may be reminded of the original thirteen colonies and perhaps even a greater sense of beginnings. Something that we may not realize, however, is that she was pivotal in the passing of the thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution. Perhaps the designer decided, since the reverse of the Ike would be used, to simply utilize the thirteen stars from the reverse and apply the same to the obverse just because. Or, perhaps, when the Commission on Fine Arts rejected the first design concept for the SBA and sought a "stronger design" that showed "more toughness", the designer decided to surround Anthony with thirteen stars representing the resolve and strength of the original colonies as they became States within the Union.

Only Frank Gasparro will ever know.

Now, we must also remember that the 1907 Double Eagle had forty-six stars signifying the States at that time, yet it's predecessors only had thirteen stars. And the Sacajawea dollars have seventeen stars on them, the number of States at the time that she guided the Lewis & Clark expedition.

But, I cannot recall any issue that did not either have the number of stars as there were States at the time of minting, or simply thirteen stars, unless it was what may be considered a commemorative type.

The thing is the design is supposed to represent Lincoln's holding holding together of the Union. (That is what the LAW says it has to be.) An image of the flag as it appeared at the end of the Civil War showing the stars for both the northern states, the southern states, and the two states that joined the Union during the war, it more appropriate than a fifty star flag. (This is one of the very few proposed designs that actually satisfies the legal requirements.)

How silly. Chintzy law requirements this and that. So instead of using one of the nice designs, we of course, are going to end up with the worst design proposed. Seems like coin designs keep getting worse and worse (like the nickel for instance). I think this just might be the worst coin in US history if they finalize it.

Now I'm not insulting our flag or anything. Our flag is the best, but this flag and the million of building designs waiting in line need to take a hike. It's unoriginal and boring. :headbang:

Every time I look at this reverse I dislike it more and more. Surely we can do better than this.

Of those three I think 12 would make an interesting design. Too bad it doesn't meet the legal requirements (None of those three do). Not that that really matters. My guess is that we will probably end up with one of the other designs that don't meet the requirements either. Only about three of the 18 proposed designs do.

I laugh and shake my head every time I see that lame design. It has no artistic attributes. The flag is symmetrical and boring...and that collegiate font they used is just plain amateurish. I am confident in saying that I (with no artistic skill) could reproduce that design in an hour or two.

I just don't understand how this is the design they've decided to go with; for shame...

    Thanks for the historical perspective.

And for that reason, I think the concept (of having 36 stars) is kinda cool. Most Americans alive today have only seen a 13-star flag and a 50-star flag.

That said, however, the design itself seems pretty sterile to me -- the waving flag is (obviously) much more dynamic.
