Hood, I learned that they used to store atomic weapons in the tunnel complex. The runway was long enough to handle B-52&#039;s, but they shut down the nuclear weapons arsenal in 1959.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In 1971, I was there when they were testing the C-5A. That plane was enormous. The cockpit was 6 stories off the ground. The landing gear had a hydraulic system that could lower the plane close to the ground so they could load tanks of the 1st Armored Division from main post. It was an awesome sight.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>I got to ride in a Tomcat once in Nevada, but I don&#039;t think I should talk about that.
