Pretty darn cool there 9 ball...see that B-26 bomber there? I worked on his cousin, the re-furbished reciprocating (big word for propeller) A-26 Counter Invader. Coolest darned plane in the then modern jet propelled arsenal of the USAF. They flew sorties at night, right along the tops of the trees. Jet fighters couldn't do that...those A-26 pilots flew by the seat of their pants, sometimes so close to the tops of the trees, they got tore off. After our involvement, we gave most of those great planes away to other countries. I don't think they appreciated it because they wanted fast, nimble fighters, but we gave them slow flying, lazy loitering multi-purpose weapons. I love the smell of Avgas in the morning.
Sounds like a take-off from Apocalypse Now.:kewl: When I was stationed at West Ft. Hood, I learned that they used to store atomic weapons in the tunnel complex. The runway was long enough to handle B-52's, but they shut down the nuclear weapons arsenal in 1959. In 1971, I was there when they were testing the C-5A. That plane was enormous. The cockpit was 6 stories off the ground. The landing gear had a hydraulic system that could lower the plane close to the ground so they could load tanks of the 1st Armored Division from main post. It was an awesome sight. I got to ride in a Tomcat once in Nevada, but I don't think I should talk about that. That's Navy, anyway. I would love to own one of the SR-77's. I could make it from Florida to Las Vegas in less than 2 hours. Chris
Air Force vet here. '73-'77. I just wish I would have looked for more and better coins to bring home with me when I was in Thailand. There, Chrisild, are we OK now.:kewl:
Guys with expensive "vehicles" are always looking to pick up every chick they see, and they have no regard for the speed limit. How many tickets did you get in that sucker? (Insert ROFL emoticon here) Chris
Hello everyone, I started this thread asking about those who served and collected coins, and there has been discussions on both. I feel we are in the right section. If any moderator disagrees. let me know. Kind regards, Stan
Oh, I know that once upon a time this topic was about people who were/are in the military and collect coins. Most of the recent posts however did not really have much to do with coins - and sure, of course the topic can stay here. After all, it may get numismatic again, hehe. Christian
The only military aircraft I've been off the ground in are a CH-46 and a C-130. The CH-46 was from the ship to East Timor to do refurb of an elementary school, and the C-130 was from Dubai to Bahrain on my way back home for terminal leave before retirement. My first trip overseas was a MAC charter, but it was a 747. I don't count that. Took off from LAX, stopped in Oakland, Anchorage and Okinawa before our final stop at Clark AB in PI. 22.5 hours total. Then a 3 hour bus ride to Subic and waited 5 hours before the ship finally sent the duty van to pick us up.
I should have included this then. Being disjointed from home, my Dad mailed me the resurrection proof set of 1968. I opened it not knowing that the Mint decided to return to making real proof coins again and it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling. On my next leave, I put the 68 set with the previous years SMS's and other flat packs. I was glad the Mint went back to producing these splendid coins. Coin production is all history, whether your serving our country, or at home in a recliner.
Just so that we can get back onto the topic of coins, when I was in Greece, I used to pay for my drinks in drachmas. Ouzo makes everything look doubled and I seen plenty of wavy steps. Better?
