CT, NGC and PCGS sites all have BS Threads. Those are seller to seller.

On such a specialized collection, the only way I see of getting it accomplished is by working with a dealer(s) who can use their resources or inventory to find them for you. Maybe more expensive than eBay, but much less coin convention expense. Few to none great collections of high end coins were done by a single person with no out reach.

We have seen several blow-outs on the forum where the 2 participants used the B/S/T advertisements , or used pms to directly solicit an exchange that went bad. CT doesn't have responsibility for exchanges. So if one person buys something at hundreds of dollars, and the other person doesn't want to part with the coin , but had to spend the money on an emergency and can't refund it, what can you as buyer do? That is when you decide eBay isn't so bad , and that you are going to be out more than the possible fees, especially if you have immediate needs for the coin or cash back. It is amazing to me that some will sell a coin on ebay that they do not have in hand, just promised to be sent soon from a third party.

The real advantage of a place like CoinTalk is when you're doing a transaction here, you're dealing with someone you've gotten to know in the discussions. Sure, we've had a few bad deals, but they've been very rare. There are some things a buyer can do to protect themselves here on CoinTalk, like use Paypal and don't send the payment as a gift, we've been over that a few times.

Over the years, I've been contacted by dozens of people who are convinced they're starting the next eBay killer. Sadly, nearly all of them don't even exist anymore. they last a few months, realize they can't get any traction, then give up. It's nearly impossible for a new site to get a critical mass of people using it, due to all the reasons people have mentioned in this thread.

Also, there's no need to code such a site from scratch either, just as there's no need to code a new forum from scratch. Just as with forums, there are quite a few 'off-the-shelf' choices of software to use, with auction sites there are too. I've not paid much attention to them, but you can find them easily with a google search.

When I saw this thread, it made me realize that I've actually been seeing less people who want to build the next eBay over the past couple years. Seems like the heyday of "eBay killers" ended several years ago, now people want to make the next Facebook killer or Twitter killer.

I'd consider adding a more full featured buy/sell/trade/auction function to CoinTalk. It might be fun, and encourage more people to do transactions here. What I doubt, though, is that the cost of me having it done (it would take some custom programming) would be justified by the increase in use overall. Meaning, I think it would take a huge investment and I'm not sure how I'd ever pay for it.

A forum mod wouldn't be ideal; you'd probably want to build out a transactional service and call an endpoint if you wanted to integrate the two. It also looke like the site is PHP; that is probably not the best for the service (the integration part is cake).

I still have one for sale. My eBay info is in the selling/auction forum.

EDIT: sorry, that is AU58 but it's nice piece. I'm going to try to take more pics.

    That's in my free time.

I've been doing this for a while ;3

    (running on ten years, now)

    Agreed.

EDIT: Also, DLRC seems pretty active. Of coursse it's not HA/S&B but whatever.

That's an interesting example. DLRC has a huge presence on eBay -- in fact, I think I remember them having some sort of large featured promotion with eBay a while back. I haven't looked at DLRC's auction site; what's the relationship between the stuff they list there and the stuff they list on eBay?

100% overlap. I look in both places, believe it or not, sometimes with the eBay DLRC promotions coins can be cheaper there.

DLRC does have a fairly tight relationship with eBay, including some very large promotions, banners, coin "events", discounts, etc. I see DLRC take their marketing to a new level vs most other large eBay sellers.

DLRC is one of the best examples of an old-school coin dealer absolutely maximizing the benefits of the modern coin hobby and the younger generation of collectors. They have a fantastic direct dealer site, but yet, they also have a massive presence on eBay, Amazon, Collectors Corner, etc.

No since restricting yourself to one venue!

    Why sorry?

If someone else does it, it saves me the work XD

Besides, I'm already coding like 10 hours a day M-F. I'm not sure I want to make commitments but I always end up having side projects.
