Why do we say that something we leave lying around "collects" dust? I'm both a collector (I have specific goals like Lincoln cents and proof sets) and an accumulator (by never getting rid of any loose change).

I wonder - how would you folks describe me and what I used to collect ? Was I an accumulator or a collector ?

No, I no longer collect as anyone who has been around here for more than week likely knows. But most of the folks who have been around here any time at all can easily remember what I used to collect/accumulate.

Oddly enough, I think answering my question will help answer Bone's question ;)

i tend to think of myself as both a collector, and an accumulator. i collect merc dimes, yet i accumulate other coins i find interesting or to me have significant historical meaning or value.

Hmmmm. We say that squirrels collect nuts for the winter, when in fact, they're probably accumulating....

I went to the online thesaurus.

    Here is the link:
    http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/collect

    NOTICE what they say:

    Main Entry: collect
    Part of Speech: verb
    Definition: accumulate

I think we're back to where we started!!!! :) :)

The coins in my safe are a collection from years of want lists, researching and from browsing through hundreds of dealers displays and cases at stores and shows alike. The coins in my jar are an accumulation of pocket change from daily deposits.

An accumulation is when you no longer have any idea where you have 'safely put away' those key dates.

[Hey, where did I put that 1901 S Barber quarter? It was here a minute ago!]

Otherwise, it is an orderly collection of say 3,000 Barber dimes.

[Darn, I could have thought that I had more than 10 1895 O dimes! Where are the other three?]

GD i'd say you were a collector, you had no specifically aimed sets but they all shared a common likeness

Well Spider, there was one set I was working on - but it was 420 years long at the time. I never quite finished that one :D

But in all honesty, I'd have to say I was an accumulator because a general rule I didn't collect sets. Didn't even try to as it would have been mostly impossible. If I saw a coin I liked, I bought it. I didn't care what it was.

But Frank was right about one thing, they were mostly round ;)

I have started a buffalo 5 cent collection. This will be 1 of each in the Dansco book, no extras other than to upgrade. And BU toned Roosys while they are so affordable.

Lincolns are my bread and butter

A Dansco 7070 also is a collection I guess, along with my " cent" collection from current to 1794, IF I ever finish it.

    well I know I am a collector
there are very few types of coins I buy
I've narrowed my scopes and turned on the determination
I am about 8 coins away from finishing my walkers and only 2 of them are pricey: the 21 and and 16-S
I recently started a MS peace dollar collection which sadly will be probably put on hold as college is in a year and I better build up some kind of money
I always wanted to start collecting the standing liberty quarters but I don't like a set I can't finish and with that damn 1916 I know I won't be able to for a long time, but I kinda am forcing myself into the set, which I guess is a plus

You know the more I read this thread the more confused I get and I don't need help in that department.

I stated some time ago that I was "an accumulation collector (I guess)"

I think I'm going to stick with that while leaning toward accumulator.

PLEASE, no one take offense but to just concentrate on one series forever would bore the socks off me and I'm a self professed Two Cent Junkie. Of course I'll buy darn near any other American coin that strikes my fancy and I can afford.

Yes, I'm dabbling with a few sets but not to the point of obsession.

Why don't I do more World and ancient? Hell, too many U.S. coins I'd like to have as well as U.S. paper money.

Conversely, non coin people that know I enjoy coins have yet to refer to me as an accumulator.

    My head hurts now;)

    Best philosophy, ever !

I want to complete sets, but I am not going to pay top dollar just because I need a certain date.
I'll pay a little more, the closer I get to completion, but not a lot.
    I guess I'm just cheap.
    ;)
