If you found one, and didn't want it for yourself, I'd appreciate a heads up. That would be great, thank you! I do have an '09 $1 star, but like yours, it's a NY note. I also have to agree with you on buying notes vs. pulling them from circ. I think hunting for stuff in circ is much more fun, than just logging onto eBay or Heritage, and looking up whatever you're looking for. Of course, I realize with some notes, you have to do this (large size notes, rare older issues, etc) and purchasing notes affords you the luxury of obtaining examples that are in much better shape, than anything you would probably find in circulation. Still, nothing beats finding a 640K star note in your pocket change, even if it has been around the block a few times. Steve, beautiful examples of those Boston '09 stars! Thank you for posting them!:thumb:
Your awesome for saying that! That's exactly my views on it. Nothing beats finding a 640k or 320k run star in your pocket or in a strap search. I used to buy-buy-buy all the time when I could afford to. I used to dread the possibility of having circulated bills in what I wanted to be a totally uncirculated collection. Them in years with the downturn of the economy and me being pretty broke these days, nothing beats running down to the bank and finding a 2006 $1 NY star that has been around the block more than a couple times haha. These days, every once and a while I will be myself something old, or something that I've spent too long hunting for in circulation but just can't find. My goal is to have at least one example (any condition or FRB) for every series from at least Series 1990-2009. Well anyways, nice to meet you. Good luck with that Boston. If I ever happen to find one that I don't need out here on the west coast, I will see if we can work something out. -Travis
There is no wrong way to collect star notes. Some collectors search circulating currency and pull notes. I compare this to my mom's blue, Whitman penny collection. It's both fun and challenging, but not worth much over face. Other collectors want uncirculated examples and are willing to pay over face value. One step further would be the collectors that have their best examples graded, and put into TPG registry sets to compete with other collectors. It's all about the interaction with other collectors and the hunt for the missing piece. It all depends on the time spent looking and your budget.
Sounds great, Travis. Nice to meet you, as well. Also, Steve, I agree with you regarding how different folks choose to collect. Everybody has different reasons, and ways of doing it, but the important thing is that you enjoy the hobby, and the people that you meet along the way. :smile
Steve, I agree with your response here about it being the interaction factor that keeps me collecting. As for myself, I generally collect from circulation finds, but will be willing to let more beat up notes pass if I feel it wouldn't be worth saving over a long period of time. My only exception to this is purchasing Gem notes from new(er) series. Generally they are not as expensive and the reward over time is much more noticeable than pulling all from circulation. If you can afford to do it, then that works. Then there are others who take it a step beyond and have them graded for the registry sets. While it's not my cup of tea, I can still understand it and have no qualms with people doing that. Do what works for you and what makes you enjoy the hobby.
Hey Dr. Kegg, I only buy the older CU star notes. Has anybody on here ever purchased anything from Harveys Money Store? He used to sell really nice good quality notes for really cheap. For a while, 90% of my collection consisted of his notes. Then, one day his eBay account was empty, and his website said that it was having work done on it. He never opened it again. Anyways, my point is, he sold really cheap series 1995 * notes for really cheap. I was also just wondering if anybody on here knows him or heard about exactly why he closed doors.
Not sure as I've never dealt with him before. When I bought notes, I used a different ebay store. Coca Currency or something like that. I have them saved in my favorite sellers part of ebay. I've been able to get decent ChCu to Gem stars from 2x face and up.
