Well I got some coins today from an old coin store which has catalogues of these things... these are some I picked out. $8 spent...
Canadian Dominion 1 Cent coin. Bone, this coin is the first issue of Dominion 1c. coins. It differs from the Provincial 1c. coin of 1858 & 1859 in 2 respects; A; It is slightly heavier than the Province of Canada's 1c. coin,as the Provincial 1c. was unpopular due to its extremely light weight. B; The portrait of Queen Victoria is crowned on the Dominion 1c. coin,as opposed to the 'Bun Head' on the Provincial 1c. coin. As this coin is an 1876H,it has the mintmark of Heaton's Mint,Birmingham,England. All Canadian coins prior to 1908 were struck at the Royal Mint,London & Heaton's Mint. Aidan.
I have a few Bank of Montreal and Upper Bank of Canada tokens, and I like them a lot. They seem to be available for a fraction of the cost of US coinage from the same time period in similar condition. Mike Marotta wrote a couple of articles about them that first got me interested, before I even made the connection that he posts on this forum. Thanks Mike.
BjC,I also have a few of the 'Front View' & 'Habitant' pieces as well as the St George pieces. The St George pieces are my favourite out of these 3. Aidan.
BjC,I can guess that this is a 'Habitant' 1d. token. As you're interested in Canadian coins & tokens like me,here is a link; http://www.charltonpress.com/Numismatics2.asp . I am a general British Commonwealth collector of coins, traders' tokens, banknotes, postal notes,& postal orders. Aidan.
Hey thanks for showing me that, I didn't know there was a Charlton guide specially for colonial tokens, I have a regular charlton guide from 2000 but I might get that colonial tokens book... thanks
BjC,I knew you'd be interested. Then that way you'd be able to start identifying those anonymous tokens from Lower Canada that you may have. How's things over there in Niagara Falls? Is it cold? Aidan.
These are the upper bank of Canada coin I have found metal detecting here in Michigan From upper left to right.. Leslie & Son circa 1820s. A 1852 Upper Bank Half Penny. A 1844 Half Penny. A big ole 1842 Penny. A 1907 Large cent. The other 3 are 1840s Half pennies. I sold one Leslie & Son and a 1859 Large cent on e-bay this past summer.
'Habitant'. Jim C (Mich), the piece at the top right of the photo is a 'Habitant' piece from Quebec City.Like the Montreal 'Habitant' pieces,it is dual denominated. The Halfpenny is also denominated as 1 Sou,& the Penny is also denominated as 2 Sous. About the Lesslie 1d. token, from which place is it from? I know that it is listed under Upper Canada, even though it is inscribed in Quebecois as well as in English. The Lesslie pieces were the only Upper Canadian pieces that contained Quebecois inscriptions. Aidan.
