Indianheads are great! Especially when you find them in rolls or in circulation! Which is about never! But I've done it 5 times and 3 were in good enough shape to make my collection! One of them actually BU!

I completed my full set of Lincolns (minus 1955 double die and 1922 no D and real fancy stuff like 1999 Wide AM) and of course, it was natural to move on to the Indians. I try to buy one coin every other week. Of course, I have the big dogs left - but I'll get them. My recommendation though is when you buy the 1877, 1864L, 1872 and 1908 and 9 S ... that you buy them from a reputable dealer or make sure they're slabbed by a reliable company. Too many fakes and misrepresented coins out there. In principal - any coin I buy over $50 must have dealer/grade approval. Protect your investments you know? And of course, once you get your coins, you will want to find a way to store them so they aren't exposed to whatever. I'd say a full set of Indians is even worth insuring! Yes. Your homeowners in most cases WILL NOT cover your coins. I'm not kidding! If you have any doubts check with your agent! My isurance requires me to pay $15/year per $1,000 in coins. Little over a buck a month for $1,000 in protection - I'll take it. That covers theft, fire, children (lol) etc. I have to list everything I have, but I determine the value as well because I'm paying the ratio for the insurance. So, that 1909 S VDB that I feel is worth $850 by say Coin Values - is only going to get say $725 in an auction ... I'm covered for the $850 as long as I pay the proper rate on the coin. Insuring them is a great way to protect your investment - I would just break down and cry if I lost my coins... but the insurance check coming in would at least give me the ability to try and get a new going soon and take the sting out of all the hard work I did and lost.

Indianheads are great though! There are several variants and double dies. I would recommend getting the 2007 Redbook of coins and then thumbing through the small cents chapter to see! I figure it's going to be a couple years before I get my Indianhead collection complete. But when it is, I'm going for large cents (I have the 1857 and 1858 Flying Eagles already and an 1856 is probably never going to reach my ownership) My 1858 Large Letter Flying Eagle is MS 64 and I just absolutely LOVE that coin. The artwork is tremendous. A lot of people consider the Flying Eagles as PART of the Indianhead collection because the backs are the same for the 1859 Indianhead and that there were so few Flying Eagles made. I really wish they had made more Flying Eagle pennies. Don't get me wrong, I really like Indianhead pennies a lot ... but the Flying Eagle was the most beautiful one cent piece ever made.

Esky
