As usual someone bests me to saying something. Must be a lot of mind readers around here. I go to miscellaneous other forums and usually just come back here. Although for some really in depth answers to specific items, sometimes it does pay to visit a possible experted web site. For example I not only go to coppercoins web site but when someone asks a question about a Lincoln Cent that is not a standard question, I usually refer them to his web site. Not sure if anyone there ever returns the favor and I really don't care. Some web sites are really just full of people messing around, some are ones that think they know everything about coins, some when you attempt to help start arguments. Here everyone gets along, most of the time anyway. Lots of differences of opinions but that's how we learn. Then too there are the sites that are so large with members that if you do ask a question and it isn't answered in a few minutes, it is soon on page 3 or 4 or ????? And then to there are some that are so small if you do ask a question you may wait years for an answer. Think I'll just stick around here and bother people.
Yes I noticed that thread over there earlier today. I have been laughing at some of the silly replies. People have nothing better to do with their time?
When I used to post on the CU boards, I was an idiot and argued with everyone. As I grew up, I read "How to win friends and influence people" by Dale Carnegie, and learned that you can't win an argument. I matured. But this thread made by laurentyvan really hurt me, and still does. I probably deserved it, but this is exactly the type of mentality that forum has http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=6&threadid=438222&highlight_key=y&keyword1=GCL
A huge advantage this forum has is when I typed in coin forum on google, this was the first one listed. That's how I found this site...
A coin forum is a coin forum. However, it's always been the people at CT that have kept me here and interested. I haven't found another comperable in this regard. Guy~
The PCGS site is the largest coin forum. 29,000 members. If you don't go there it is your loss. Sure there will be members you don't like. Forget them. Just go to learn. Same with NGC. It's what you make of it.
I think I joined NGC forums, but have never posted - or even read the threads. I also like coinzip, but first will always be cointalk. I like it here and have no desire to even post on one of the TPG sites. I have a very thick skin and could probably handle something like PCGS forum. I will be here for a long time.
There is an old story about a person that wanted to know the true meaning of life, the real reason we are here, the one real purpose of it all. So he started looking in churches, shools, libraries and found nothing that made him think that anything so far answered his quests. One day someone told him that on the top of a mountain in Tibet there is an old lama that can answer any question of that type. So this man sold all his items like his house, car, clothing, etc and used the money to go to Tibet. He climbed that mountain and found the old Lama siting in a cave and walked up to him and asked What is the real meaning of life, the true purpose of us all being here, what is this all about?????? The old Lama said one should never argue with anyone about anything for any reason. That is what this is all about. The man yelled at him and said WHAT? You mean I spent all my money, time, effort to see you and you tell me THAT??? The old Lama said OK then that is not the answer.
I like cointalk for its friendlier then most atmosphere. I dont need a thick skin to hang or chill around here. for that matter... nobody does. The mods and all the members themselves do an excellent job policing the forums and threads. Folks who join and cant fit in or dont like the atmosphere becuase they like to provoke 'drama' usually either are 'helped' to get the additude fixed, or leave on their own because they dont get the feedback their look for. This is the only 'chat' place i would let my own kids hangout at and not have to worry about whats said, who said what, or who or what might be said to my own kids either in a thread or PM. I know how bad the world can be, especially to kids, and more especially on-line... but i feel so confident that the mods, and all the dedicated members would never let inappropriate comments pass, that my children would be safe to browse the threads and learn about coins. There are too many other coin chat rooms that are not just about coins (or numismatics for that matter), and my kids would not be safe browsing there. sorry, but 7 years olds dont have thick skin, and neither should they need it when learning about coins and currency!
I really don't know how I stumbled onto this forum, but its the only coin forum i have visited. Therefore, it is the best one IMO :hail: I'm a stickler for "commitment"
CT was my first forum ever, and while I still go elsewhere for information as well, I will keep coming back here! Thanks everyone!!
WOW! That is a bomb on us... Whatever, just time to turn the other cheek, we are a friendly forum, and nobody gonna stop us
This really is the most friendly forum out there on coins, even more than coin community. I got in trouble in coin community for chatting with one of their members on AIM (They had an AIM icon in their profile), they told me I was "driving away" members from their website by chatting with them on AIM
I'll certainly stick to CT. After a recent experience at CU forums, I have to say they are more about emotion than anything and IMO the atmosphere is rather "unfriendly". Lots of posters are just itching to post something negative, they are either being sarcastic veiling their sarcasm until a thread becomes a flame war.....no thanks. There is a good amount of expertise there, but it's spoiled by the people that apparently just go there to start crap.
BadThad, I absolutely agree... People at other forums are just downright rude. I belong to three coin forums, and I'm here the most... And I have to say, I'm proud to be a member here! This place is so friendly and nice, and some of us might come off strong, I know I do, but we all have one common point of interest and that is coins/paper money, and we are so close. We are a family, and we are always looking out
I think CT is a pretty informative place. I've experienced some abrasiveness but in hindsight, I suppose I was pretty abrasive myself. Overall CT is very well put together and certainly has many knowledgable folks. I think one can find an answer to just about any question they need. You occasionally have to duck but good information overall.
as a newbie, I must say... this is a very friendly place to be. I also run a firearms forum and must say the same, I enjoy that it is beginer friendly. I mean, come on, should be proud to share your wealth of knowledge
As you can tell, AJ and I do post on the CU forum, but I am relatively new to all forums and just naively thought CU would be a "professional" type forum - boy, was I wrong. I got my axx chewed the first time I posted something, having not been familiar with all the rules and protocols! And thanks to people who knew me personally, and other CU members who were human beings, as well as of course, my hero AJ, I received a lot of support and positive comments, and they even came down hard on the nasty guys who had to go away hopefully with their tail between their legs. So as a dealer who needs to keep marketing my business, I try to stay in the game on CU, but I am so glad I can come here to lick my wounds and be among friends!
