Just read this somewhere else: « In my view, cointalk is a non-serious forum, popular because of a like button. »
What do you think of that ? Do you agree with this statement ? For myself, I think this is totally BS. So please tell me why you like this place. Seriously. Personally, I like our forum because it makes me think about my favorite sport; bowling…

P.S. What is the like button ?????

You know to each their own....if your not happy here dont let the door hit ya where the lord split ya!
I've been a member here as well other forums. Each have their own atmosphere. I will not go into details calling out each for plus or minus....except here and why?
CT is middle of the road forum....for the most part everyone gets along , you wont find a more genous group anywhere! And I say that because of my 11 +/- years here I have seen random acts of kindness that one never see elsewhere.
And that genousity isn't just material things! There have been ,and are members here who have gone way above the mark as to caring about another member.
So if the membership here isn't your cup of tea....no worries dont log on....its very simple...fix. :)

Oh and one other thing.....when your blue blood friends are done with your pompous butt drag it back over to CT
The lights are on.....and you're going to find its business as usual.

Somebody's just bitter and envious. Pay no attention. There's plenty of "serious" numismatic content here, along with everything else we have. As I've said before, there's nothing wrong with show and tell. Apart from the enjoyment of it, the more coins I see, the more I learn.

I don't like the place you read that opinion, mainly for personal reasons. Yep, it's more academic, to put it so. And I still read it sometimes but not too often. For the mentioned personal reasons, that annoyed me badly, in a day between Christmas and New Year 2020, when people should be relaxed, I have no pleasure posting there.
And if I want to dig deeper, it was a form of public and private bullying and if I dig even deeper, with a touch of xenophobia.
And yep, I admit that my contribution would be far less than the regular experts there, but the knowledge I gathered could help some beginners.

My opinion - CT is like a themed cafe. Yep, some threads are way too light and relaxed but hey, I like this! As long as chit chat is not the main theme of CT, and this is certainly not the case. And I will say it again - 90% of my ancient numismatics knowledge is from CT. Am I an expert? No. I will probably never be one as I do not have the time and financial resources to become one. But CT is a serious forum and one I truly enjoy being a member of. I also virtually met true collectors, specialists and simply people I admire and would like to meet in person someday.

Like button? I see I have 9225 likes so far. A lot and perhaps more than I "deserve". But does this help me eat or sleep better? Nope.
Am I glad when I drink my coffee in the morning and see that an opinion I posted or a coin was liked by some colleagues, especially the ones I admire the most? Yep, I am glad.
I also hit the Like button when I see an educational post (especially), or a coin I ... like.

And anyway, everyone is free to visit and be active on the exact websites he or she likes. If I like something, I visit it regularly. If I like it a little or I just need a website from time to time, I visit it when needed or when there is nothing better to do. If I don't like it at all, I don't visit it. Simple.

CT is as serious as the members want it to be (and remember Doug @GDJMSP and @dougsmit are watching you) and some posts are so academic that I can't follow them, while others are just silly...kind of like real life.

In my opinion, coin collecting, like Life, is supposed to be fun. Therefore, I like the funny stuff that happens, on CoinTalk. On the other hand, there is plenty of interesting discussion and information, on CoinTalk. Yes, coins have a historical component. And, in that sense, there is a serious side, to coin collecting. But I think it's good, that CoinTalk has a mix of seriousness and fun. And I like the "show and tell". I guess, that "numismatics", the study of coins, is different than coin collecting. But it seems like, there is overlap, between numismatics and coin collecting. I think that, there is plenty of numismatics, on CoinTalk. CoinTalk Ancients is my favorite Ancients coin forum. And I like the "Likes", because they are fun. Although, I suppose, it is possible, to become "addicted" to Likes, and to start worrying about not having enough Likes. I'm not too worried, about not having enough Likes. I guess it's good, that there isn't a "Dislike" button. I'm just happy, that I haven't been banned yet.

Regarding coins, I only follow CT and the ancient coins page on reddit. I've looked into other forums as well, like Coin Community Forum, Forum Ancient Coins, and other Facebook groups, but I defaulted into CT. Most of these sites are either 'too professional' or simply not enticing me much.
On CT I like the casual show and tell, with the occasional long winded write-ups. Moreover it's a congregation of like minded people sharing their knowledge on different niches. For instance your local coin club may only have very few collecting ancients, let alone someone who's interested in the 13th century South India!

Both FORVM and CT are great. I have posted on another thread my more detailed thoughts on their relative strengths. I think it is unfortunate that some folks seem determined to create a fake rivalry by speaking ill of the forum they don’t favor. No such rivalry need exist.

Like others who have posted here, I enjoy logging onto CT, reading what others have posted, and sometimes posting my own content or responses. We have many CT'ers in this forum who are extremely knowledgeable and specialized who post a lot of great content that I always learn from. I have also seen the tremendous acts of kindness on this forum, and people supporting each other through the good and the bad. All of this makes CT really tight-knit community of people with all levels of numismatic knowledge who are bonded together by a passion for ancient coins.

I disagree that just because this online community uses "likes" that it is "non-serious". I think that it is as serious as it needs to be. In life, when people start taking themselves too seriously then it is time to check your ego. There are plenty of experts that take themselves and their interests too seriously, but when you become arrogant by putting your own intellect or knowledge above those of others, you are isolating yourself needlessly. More mature experts choose to share their knowledge to help others grow.

I continue to be amazed by the members in this forum, the discussion, the topics, and the depth of expertise. And yes, I also enjoy the newbies posting coins to identify, which I always take as a challenge. It's all good!

I dislike the likes very much and it's possible in the other forums thread, the likes comment was in regards to a recent post of Alegandron or Doug getting their own "100,000" likes thread.

I ignored the threads since it's like men comparing their....... "sizes". Who really cares.

I've read the thread in question over at FORVM. This isn't the first time this has happened, and I don't really understand the continuing need some people over there have to denigrate the quality of Coin Talk's ancient coins forum and the seriousness of the posts here.

Especially for the people commenting on that thread who also post regularly here, I think it's completely gratuitous and in extremely poor taste. (Particularly to complain about how it's only the "popular" people here who get lots of likes and attention. Please stop!) As well as unworthy of that site, which I consult often. One doesn't see people here attacking Forvm. I'm sorely tempted to go over there and ask them to stop this sort of foolishness, and tell them how embarrassed and ashamed of themselves they should be, but it would probably just make things worse.

Finally, I understand the resentment of the one commenter there who was banned here -- apparently without any explanation -- but he doesn't really accomplish anything by complaining about Coin Talk either.

Yes, Forum Ancient Coins has a lot of excellent information. I go there sometimes.
Coin Community Forum has an "Ancient, Greek, Roman, And Medieval Coins" forum, and I sometimes go there.
I don't know of any other English-speaking ancient coin forums, that have much traffic.
I believe, that CoinTalk is a serious forum, but it is also a fun forum. CoinTalk has serious threads and posts, and CoinTalk has fun threads and posts. But, that's one of the things, that I like, about it.
Forum Ancient Coins seems to have a higher percentage of serious posts, versus CoinTalk. But, some people seem to prefer that.
It's nice, that there are more than 1 English-speaking ancient coin forums. It's nice to have a choice.

But who really cares enough to go out of their way to criticize the option? You, it seems! Perhaps you should relinquish your own 41,000 "likes"? In any event, you're obviously entitled to your opinion, just as I'm entitled to mine that it was in poor taste for you to go to another website to say things like:

"There is also a lot of favoritism/cliqs on there I don't care for. Some popular people post 1 ho-hum coin and 50 replies occur whereas a more interesting coin or something unique gets posted, it's lucky to get 3 replies. It's also filled with "me too" replies, I.E. post 30 Gordy III ants in the thread because the first post is a persons new Gordy III ant. Annoying."

Just who are these "popular people," if I may ask? And just which posts of yours got insufficient attention in your opinion? It happens to all of us that our posts don't get a lot of comments, and it's ridiculous to take it personally and speak of it as if this were high school and we were all a bunch of mean girls. Did it occur to you that giving a post a "like" without commenting on it happens to be a good way of giving it attention when you have nothing novel to say? I've liked plenty of your posts. But it seems that you're trying to have it both ways on this.

Also, if 30 people post their Gordy III ants, it isn't simply because an OP did so, but because an OP did so and specifically requested that others post their own! If that kind of show and tell thread annoys you, then ignore it, but please don't attack people for doing what they were asked to do.

I am very happy and honored of being a CT member. It is a serious forum where members share their knowledge. One can learn something new, interesting or fun everyday, ask questions and get references and answers about topics that are very important for us coin collectors.

The opinion about CT from the OP just shows the opinion of someone who thinks that a like button is all that matters for being popular, which in my opinion is not what matters for a site being popular.

Let them talk, good or bad, it doesn’t matter. Let your success deal with it.
