I think you're twisting what it means, conder.

It has to do with treating people with respect when they act like they respect themselves (which includes respecting others) and treating people with disregard when they show little to no respect for others or themselves.

Some people may be cool with you calling them a jerk because they feel like you are calling them that lovingly. That may be the way that you and your friends interact. That defines how you would like to be treated. I'll take a pass regardless of how okay with it you happen to be..
