I have a question... I have a plastic holder for my 1922 peace dollar... could that cause damage... all of my coins and dollars are held in plastic coin pages as well... I keep them in my binder... could those cause damage?
Jeez, some of us are old, give us a chance. If the pages or flips smell like a new shower curtain or are really soft and flexible, they are PVC and should be replaced. If the plastic is hard or rigid, you are probably OK.
Your point about the smell not persisting for years is valid. If the material appears really soft (like a baggie or shower curtain) or is starting to yellow, replace it if you can. I understand your concern about cost, if there are any coin shops in your area, they sell single pages. The flips the coins are in are more important than the pages since the coins come in close contact to the material of the flips.
I have done that too, although they can skate around that way and perhaps pick up some scratches. Also there is a difference between cardboard 2x2's and flips...
As I’m looking at the foldable... I’m realizing they’re yellowing... as soon as I get home I’m going to take them out
Hey Rage, Here is a good discussion on these with some recommendations on where to get them. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/guardhouse-2x2-double-pocket-flips-unplasticized-vinyl.368597/ Thought this would be good for your research. Z
@DarkRage666 ,That 9th coin you posted shows (I believe) the first portrait of Queen Elizabeth II when she was very young. Is that a six pence? See its reverse. If so, I've got an interesting trivia to share with you. One of the things I like about this hobby is hearing the stories behind the coins.
