Here's an interesting newish coin... It's interesting because it's a first issue with a bust with the characteristics of the previous (although briefly in-place) Gallic emperor Marius rather than the new emperor Victorinus. It's also cool because it was a coin from the Rockbourne hoard, found with 7707 coins in a clay jar in the Rockbourne villa in Hampshire England in 1967. Victorinus Colonia Agrippinensis (Cologne) mint. 1st emission, AD 269. Ob: IMP C PI VICTORINVS AVG Radiate and cuirassed bust right, with the features of Marius R: AEQVITAS AVG Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopia. RIC V 41 and 126; Mairat 309; AGK 1b. Don't really have any that come to mind. Although I'm thinking some folks probably have a brand-new Trajan with the features of Nerva.
Happy to have an excuse to post this one again. Trajan, AR Denarius. Rome, 98-99 A.D., (17mm, 3.22g), RIC 30 Obv: IMP NERVA CAES TRAIAN AVG GERM P M., Laureate head of Trajan (with Nerva-like features) right./ Rev: TR P COS II PP., Pax seated left on throne, holding branch and caduceus.
That's a great coin @Shea19 ! I have one similar coin of Trajan with a bust that somewhat resembles Nerva... these were probably minted at about the same time huh? 98-99 AD RIC 390 I can think of others with the characteristics of previous emperors... I'll have to dig them out later... early Maximinus, Gordian, Aurelian... to name a few.
That's right! Some early issues of Maximinus Thrax resembled Severus Alexander. I don't have one but I've seen examples. That was before they found out he had acromegaly, a condition caused by excessive human growth hormone leading to a jutting jawline, large features, and enormous size. Of course, the ancients didn't know this but modern medicine has figured this out. If he had been born today Maximinus would be playing center on an NBA team.
My site on Maximinus Thrax http://augustuscoins.com/ed/Maximinus/Maximinus.html begins with an example of his early portrait and a similar portrait of Severus Alexander: Note that even the obverse legend has the same format: IMP <name> PIVS AVG For much more about the coins of Maximinus, see the site.
That's a beautiful Victorinus/Marius! I do have one, not much to look at but it was mixed in an inexpensive job lot (I still need to take pics of it) What is interesting is that Victorinus also used a very Postumus-like bust, giving some credence to the Historia Augusta's claim that Marius was just a blip on the radar who was gone as fast as he came. I sold this one last year; I regret parting with it. Anyway, I do have some others Severus Alexander-esque Maximinus (these are a lot scarcer than I initially thought) Gordian with a Balbinus-like face Are we *sure* this isn't Gordian III in drag? This first year Gallienus looks more like Victorinus Ditto with this one, although maybe it's just from an unusual mint? Early Aurelian is barely distinguishable from Claudius II Here is an interesting Tetricus that I think may be the result of confusion about what he looked like? I dont think this one is barbarous.
