I had an idea just now. Hence, this post. It's a thread about Not just nothing but something. It's actually about coins that you Sold, Lost got Stolen or other..... That you would like to get back really badly. I no longer have the picture, but I once found a problematic while Metal Detecting that was an 1864 Two Cent piece. It was the "small motto" variety. I sold it to another member here. It was in the Fine category with some corrosion. I now wish I hadn't sold it but hopefully it's in a good home. Here is what it looked like but with less quality and a song to go with it....
In the 1970's-80's I put together a very prime Franklin half set. That was before we talked about full bell lines and such and the very best Franklins could be had at five bucks. That book was stolen from me. Sure do wish I had that back.
My father had a $5 Indian from his father. I only saw it once or twice. No one knows what happened to it. Neither of my siblings would have taken it so I kind of suspect stepmom. She was nice enough but had kind of a gold digger vibe. That's all I can think of in the "lost" category.
I once had a collection of about 50 miscellaneous dated Indian Head cents. I say once because I lost them. It has been 50+ years and they have not shown up yet. Damn, they are in this house somewhere!
Kinda wish I had some of the gold I bought near melt, then flipped for a profit when the price of gold jumped... to $1600, or $1900, or...
The one that really bothers me is not a fat man dollar but rather a fat man half dollar. Significantly more rare and valuable but not at the time I sold it. I still can’t get a good feel for the Chinese coin market.
Not exactly what you were looking for, when you wrote this post, but..... I'm currently going through my old lists (unfortunately, over the decades I had five different hand-written lists, some referencing the same coins!), and pulling my coins bit-by-bit, and cross-checking and inventorying (mostly) everything in Exact Change software. Unfortunately, I've come across some coins that are on the lists, but cannot find the coins in the vault, at home, or anywhere! Very frustrating! Hopefully they'll pop up at some point, when I get more from the vault (it's a pain, not having the coins immediately accessible!) - maybe they were mixed in with some others by accident. Fingers crossed. So far, I'm missing: 1817 Coronet Head Large Cent About a dozen Morgan Dollars - some slabbed - how can I lose slabbed coins??? 1883 Liberty Nickel, No Cents 1934 Washington Quarter About six Mercury Dimes A couple Lincoln Cents - slabbed 1957 Franklin Half - slabbed
My ex-wife stole my entire coin collection and everything else I had when she divorced me. My coins, arrowheads, grand parents furniture, sea shells and everything that I had collected as a kid. She even stole the gifts that were given to me over the years. I do miss a number of those things but my coin collection is larger and worth much more than it was. I haven’t replaced all of it and I’m not trying to do so. Life is good to me and I enjoy it.
LOL, As your Elder, reading your post, I remembered where I put hundreds/thousands? of rolled/2x2 Indian cents from an estate purchase, decades ago. I checked, they were still there, and many in a 2x2-filled "THE $5 PENNIES LONSON COIN BOX, Jan. 6 1917 box, with a top 1898 F stated coin. Do you think they may have appreciated over the decades? UPDATE: I viewed my CDN GREYSHEET for the 1878 F Indian cent value, $1.75 value! I think I'll return to searching for certified 70 Gold Eagles, of which I've already purchased two, while Sellers are profit-taking with the Gold "spot" price increase! WOW!!
Totally agree. If thought of that, too. So, my "like" means "I feel your pain", I guess? I certainly don't "like something being stolen, or being sold and feeling regret, but I'm acknowledging that I read your post and can relate to it in some fashion. I sold a Franklin Half set, and a Washington Quarter set (silver) and would love to have them back!
