I've recently picked up a couple of provincial coins from Pautalia, Thrace that I thought I'd share. Pautalia, Thrace Faustina II, AE, 147-153 AD Obverse: ΦAVCTEINA CEBACTH, draped bust right, hair knotted behind head. Reverse: OYΛΠIAC ΠAYTAΛIAC, Tyche, kalathos on head, standing left, holding rudder and cornucopiae. References: BMC 142,12, Ruzicka 139; Moushmov 4114; Varbanov 4490 Size: 22.3mm, 7.17g Pautalia, Thrace Geta as Ceasar, AE, 209-211 AD Obverse: P CEPTI - GETAC K, draped bust right. Reverse: PAVTALIWTWN, Braided basket filled with grapes. References: Ruzicka 847; Varbanov 5348; Unlisted in WoodWinds Size: 18mm, 4.62g The site of Pautalia (modern Kyustendil, Bulgaria) was settled in the Iron Age by the Thracian Dentheletes tribe. It was located near thermal springs and remains of the ancient city include a temple of Asclepios and Roman baths. In the 1990s, excavation of nearby 2nd century A.D. tumuli unearthed bronze surgical instruments and a small bronze case containing a variety of medicines. I'm really liking the other portraits I've seen and the varieties of reverses. Please post your coins of Pautalia!
I have a lot of well-circulated orichalcum coins of Faustina II from Pautalia, such as this. You can see them all here: But my favorite one is this one -- it's less worn, it's nicely patinated, and Athena's owl is so cute!!
it is a place rich in history to be sure.. nice coins!.. i don't know if i have any coins, but i do have some artifacts from there i bought from a ..O, i call him a friend, but haven't bought or talked to him in years.. ironically tonite, i looked to see what he had for sale..nothing really i'd be interested in.. and as i remember he got upset because he wanted me to make an offer on stuff i really wasn't interested in and didn't like my offer... haha!... i guess he's over it by now....anyway this piece i got from him, a bronze fertility bracelet...could be anytime between 4th-14th (or later) century..
Very nice, @Justin Lee So far I have just one Pautalian provincial and I've shown it many times THRACE, Pautalia. Caracalla CE 198-217 AE29, 16.4 gm Obv: AYT K M AY CEY ANTΩNEINOC; Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right Rev: OYΛΠIAC ΠAYTAΛIAC; Asklepios seated right on back of winged serpent Ref: Varbanov 5007
hmm..funny these coins had Faustina jr's bun with a wisp of hair underneath the bun.... altho it does come out further than Lucillas on Roman coins..
