I don't believe that your coin is missing a clad layer. It appears to have environmental damage on the obverse & the reverse. Sometimes a long soak in Acetone will help remove the surface color but I recommend that the coin be set-free back into circulation.
I don't know who was giving that advice, but it has been my understanding that NGC & PCGS will not cross ANACS coins. Maybe I'm wrong. Chris
So, if you like the grade assigned to an attributed, ANACS slabbed coin and later decide you want PCGS or NGC plastic, would you have to crack it out and send it in raw with the insert (for attribution purposes)? Would they not accept a submission in an ANACS slab? I'm not at all familiar with the process. I just see a flawed business model; I would think any coin slabbed by a competitor would be a statistical and advertising victory of it were reholdered in their product. I'm puzzled.
Yes, you would have to send it in raw, but the ANACS insert would serve no purpose where an attribute is concerned. Both NGC & PCGS have their own standards. If you choose to submit it in the ANACS slab, you would probably have to submit it with the notation "cross at any grade". The meaning of the term "crossover" implies that the coin will grade the same or better, but not lower. The problem that NGC & PCGS have is that many of the new slabs (blue or yellow inserts) will not cross at the same or better grade. Additionally, most of the small, white ANACS slabs that were heretofore believed to be conservatively graded (much like the PCGS OGH) have long since been crossed and very few still remain. Chris
Is this dime missing a clad layer or is it just victim to the environment? I put it beside a normal dime to compare. Caught my eye either way.
One of my favorite clad layer missing coins. I have 25 different state quarters with the reverse clad layer missing. Trying to get all 50 states!
Cool beans. I like the Connecticut quarter with missing reverse layer. When bright red, it reminds me of the burning bush. Do you have a photo of one?
Unfortunately, mine is brown . I do love the CT design. It is a simple yet beautiful design. Always one of my favorites. I had a bright red one once, but as with many of them, even though I am trying to get a complete set, If someone offers me a large amount of money for one, I usually sell it. I have owned 45 different states total, and multiples of many states.
Have you ever seen one of these? This is the only clad layer missing blank planchet I have seen. I got it certified to be sure it was authentic.
Your example is the only one I have ever seen. It is interesting that the 90% copper side is more gnarly than the 90% Nickel side. This must be due to the 90% copper side being softer eh? Thanks for sharing it in this thread.
