I know that episode from the Twilight Zone marathon a few 4th of Julys ago. In fact, the man robbed a bank or an assay office sometime in the 1940's, and he and his accomplices hid the gold and themselves in a remote cave in the desert, and went to sleep inside their time machine. They awoke 200 years later, and were left wandering through the desert carrying only a few gold bars. One of the men dies, and only two are left, and throughout the course of their desert wanderings, one trades gold bars for sips of water from the other. Eventually the man who traded the water dies, and the other takes the gold bars back. In the end, he is on the brink of death as he sees a passing hover car. He stops them, and says he'll trade all his gold for a drink of water, immediately before passing out. He is declared dead, and the man in the other says to his wife 'This old man believed that this gold bar was valuable. Didn't he know that they found a way to mass produce it?" (or something to that effect) From what I remember, the episode that I watched had nothing to do with a bank account. Still, though, your point is valid. I just don't see anyone mass-producing gold from lead in the near future. And as the previous poster pointed out, gold has been a medium of financial transactions for thousands of years. Next time I go to a coin show, I'm gonna buy as many silver Roosies as I can afford. The melt value is just over 97 cents, so I should be able to pick some up for under $1.10? Seems like a good price to me.
