The topic of stamps came up elsewhere. Aside from the passions that connect all collectors, stamps and coins have much in common. We know that during the American Civil War, stamps were used as money and special holders for them were devised. The phenomenon was also seen in Russia during World War I.
Stamp collecting and coin collecting are quite common as dual hobbies. I started collecting coins in 1948 and started stamp about the same time. Both are fun and educating.
Now the pony express block will be housed with this medal from the Nevada State museum. BTW this medal struck on press #1 and has a CC mint Mark!
I use to collect both but self adhesive stamps killed the stamp hobby. Still working on using my stamps.
I recently bought a couple of stamps with coins on them. Sigh. Coins and stamps. I feel like a weirdo now lol
I have many hundreds of unused stamps that I am trying to use. Sorted them by denomination and pull out a few whenever I need postage. I quit in 2000. The USPS was making wallpaper. Much like the US Mint is doing now. Quit them too.
I do have a complete set of Mint, never hinged, perfectly centered and perfect perfs with strong color Zeppelin stamps. They use to be worth $3000 but I think they may be worth a grand or so today.
I used to collect stamps when I was much younger. As teenager I kind of lost interest in them. In my early 20's I went to ta local stamp club meeting and donated all my stamps to the kids at the meeting. The only thing I have that combines the coins and stamps is a 1970s Mort Reed Numistamp.
