Thanks for posting the catalog site @altaycoins My ONLY Mamluk Coin: Egypt Mamluk Qalaun 1279-1290 CE AR Dirham Dianeshq
Nice coin of an interesting period in Egypt's history as an Islamic country, just a few years before the Mamluks under Baybars defeated the Mongols at the battle of Ayn-Jalut. Thanks for posting it @Alegandron
Great to see that. I have Balog's book The Coinage of the Ayyubids which is very handy. I am now hitting the link. Thanks for the info.
I've got 2 bronzes : The first is Sultan Barquq and was struck in Damascus circa 1382 AD. Balog 562. The second represents Sultan Al Zaher Baybars and was struck in Hamah of Syria as well, circa 790 AH. It has a lion heading left on reverse. But condition is far below average.
Are you sure about the attribution of this one? I have a better example and the left center reads like Qonya (todays konya) and I read Abu Said on the other side. Maybe Abu Said Timurbagh? ilkhan or mamluk by altaycoins posted Apr 21, 2018 at 7:57 AM
I know nothing about Mamluk coins. The attribution that was given to me indicates Balog 562. So why don't we consult this first. Then, for sure coin-friend Pelinor knows a lot about that. Hope he could give us a hand.
It should be noted that the whole museum notes from ANS is now online and can be downloaded for free. Balog is just one of the many gems in the series. For instance, Coinage of Cilician Armenia by Paul Bedoukian can also be downloaded.
