This was a steal for sure.... AV 3 Tari d'oro ND Messina Mint Konrad I Von Hohenstaufen 1250-54 King of Sicily mint state ex: Baron Von Bruck Collection. This coin is listed in Friedberg VF-$15000 EF-Very rare I secured for 800 euros.
Found in a bag of junk/cull coins: In its retirement home, prior to selling for several times the cost of the entire bag: One of 900 minted. I'm glad I had the opportunity to save it from the melting pot. Yes, in fact, there is at least one collector of holed proof trade dollars.
"Lucky finds" are kinda my thing; the joy of the hunt is probably my main motivation in the hobby, and since I was raised a cheapskate, it's only luck that lets me get anything good. But since this is World Coins, and I barely know enough about non-US coins to recognize a treasure, I'll hold my tongue in this thread.
If you look in the Krause catalog for World Coins, you will find that US coins are listed. So, have at it! ~ Chris
Well, there is only one world whose coins are widely collected at present -- at least as far as we know...
I have made many very fortunate buys over the years. Here a few: Peru, Lima, 1/2 Escudo Fernando VII 1821. A very scarce de coin and type. Paid bullion value for this, about $90.
Duchy of Hessen, Zwey Gulden 1848. Only 2 are known to exist. Only one recorded sale at 6800 euros. Flea-market buy at the equivalent today of $95
United States, 1 cent 1798. Variety Sheldon-163. The second best known of this very scarce variety. (I believe it is actually as good as the best known). Paid about $700. The best known sold a few years ago for about $30K.
Denarius of Servius Sulpicius Galba, 6 AD. Minted in Hispania. Only two are known of this type. Type unknown until this example was found. This is by far the best of the two known.
Did you know that before you bought it? Or were you able to look it up before purchase? I find it quite difficult to remember all the world's scarce coins without carting a copy of Krause about...
Mine has to be this Isle of Man halfcrown. Not common, but not excessively rare either. This one sold at a St James' auction in 2014 for £2400 hammer. It subsequently appeared at a DNW auction, starting at £1600. I was tempted, but had my eye on other things so let it go. It resurfaced in a later DNW sale, and started at £800. Thank you very much.
