I'm quite happy with this new purchase. Bought this coin for a reasonable price. It's a bit rough, but for me that's no problem. Probably handled by quite a few Romans It's a sestertius with a carpentum, drawn by two mules. I found this article, very interesting, about this coin. The article suggests that this coin was issued by Tiberius to honor Livia after her recovery in AD 22 from a (serious) illness. Livia probably was allowed to ride in a carpentum (to the games....) cause of her position as a priestess. The use of a carpentum in those days was largely restricted to priests and Vestal virgins. Later on also allowed for imperial ladies...... Livia AE Sestertius, struck under Tiberius, AD 22-23. 33mm, 24,51g. Obv. SPQR IVLIAE AVGVST, ornamented carpentum, drawn right by a pair of mules. Rev. Interesting. For some reason I thought these types were posthumous. And they were wheeling her dead bones out of town in the cart. Great score! Here's mine:
