If the topic is aesthetics, then my favorite design is the Draped Bust series, and I think the most beautiful coin ever is the 1804 Draped Bust Silver Dollar, Class I, Watters-Childs Specimen. This coin is believed to have been minted in 1834 and presented as a gift from the US government to Said bin Sultan, the Sultan of Muscat & Oman, for concluding a treaty that gave very favorable trade and transport terms to the US. And yes, this is the same specimen that was auctioned by Bowers & Merena for $4.14 Million in 1999; however, I have posted it here not because of its value, but because I think it is the prettiest of the Class I specimens. And I own it only in my dreams. Another favorite of mine is this 1807 Draped Bust Cent. This is Sheldon variety S-271 from the Walter Husak collection that was sold in 2008. To my eyes, the S-271 variety is one of the best. Liberty's face has an open and friendly look, and the denticles are nicely done. This particular coin is well struck and has a great chocolate patina. The photo was taken by Walt Husak himself, and Tom Deck has kindly posted the entire Husak collection on his website, www.largecents.net , if you are interested. The Draped Bust is my favorite representation of Lady Liberty. What else can I say...I am a sucker for a pretty face!
