I prefer circulated coins but not too circulated. An EF-45 is my favorite grade. So I guess I'm a slob's snob.
Neither I guess. I like a bit of honest patination on just about any coin, but if the devices are so worn that their artistic value is gone, I lose interest. So I'm all about the AU. When it comes to purchasing, I do it the stupid way: buy better and better examples of a given coin until I've really spent some money. Then all the previous ones serve mainly to make the expensive one look good
Wow, I haven't posted here to CT in forever! I am definitely a converted snob. When I started collecting, I was all over the place, picking up Morgans, junk silver, large cents, and just about anything I thought was cool. Now that I've learned more, read a huge amount of material and began seriously collecting a single series (Lincolns) I'm much pickier about the coins I buy. I only collect PCGS Lincolns cents. That may make me a kool-aid drinker, but I like to think I do a good job of buying the coin not the slab. I have a few coins in my collection that despite being common as dirt in MS66RD took a few months to acquire through Teletrade because all the offerings weren't attractive to me despite the TPG grade. And a few that were graded lower MS 63-64 that I paid way over price guide for because of excellent strike and eye appeal. I prefer PCGS simply because I like the holder and I want my set to be as congruent as possible both in the way the coins look and how they're presented. I have no feelings one way or another about whether PCGS is more strict on Lincolns. I would certainly buy an NGC coin if I agreed with the grade and thought it would cross at grade to PCGS. Just my two cents, I hope to post alot more around here!
In all fairness, I think your explanation in your second paragraph makes you a "Realist" not a "Kool-aid Drinker". I think you will find this thread amusing (see link below). NGC or PCGS: The Ultimate Poll
I started out as a slob but have evolved into a snob, at least with my Canadian type collection. I've reached the expensive coins (Victoria silver) now and MS examples are uber-expensive, thus slowing down my rate of acquisition tremendously. OTOH my Canada nickels collection is comprised mostly of circulated examples but it is complete up to 2010.
Somewhere, somewhere, I have a cache of Victorian- & Edwardian-era Canadian silver. I remember they're not in great shape though. Don't even know where I got them, I assume they were handed down in my family at some point. Should I try and find them? I wonder.
Being young and being a snob is hard to do. A Merc dime under Ms 65 that's not a key date doesnt deserve my attention. Well I may end up with some but I am one who likes the finest of the fine I guess. Oh well they are nice and shiny
Interesting thread. I am not sure I would be a snob even if I could afford to be one. I really like my worn large cents and some of the high grade coins I think are ugly - especially the red ones. I do swing both ways with some of the coin types I collect.
without a doubt,, I am a SLOB. IMO, as you progress through the hobby and age, you'll more than likely be able to be either. Disposable income, peak earning years, etc... You may even join the SNOB's for a time. That said, if you can affort to be a SNOB but elect to be a SLOB, and realize just as much enjoyment as the SNOB's, then you've won in this game. Kinda like living in your own skin... One of the reasons I admire Doug so much, even having never met him. Unsure what you'd call him.. maybe a GOBBLER, as his enjoyment appears to be the digestion of the body of knowledge rather than the possession of the content. I think he's evolved beyond most here,, even us VOL SLOB's, who sometimes relapse into Snobbery, but less and less often ; )
I am somewhere in the middle, I have minimum requirements for coins that I purchase but they don't normally reach MS. Does that make me a smob?
