Or at least get close enough to the genuine coin to scan it with an RFID reader. Once he's done that he can make a bunch of them that all have the correct number and whose RFID chips broadcast the same info as the genuine one.

Could you hide a reader on you and scan all the coins during lot viewing at the major auctions? Probably. So getting the Physical possession of each slab doesn't sound too difficult.
