well, here's 148 bucks i spent at a little coin show i went to today, was surpirsed to find some acients. i'll post up the ancients here once i attribute them, all post the others in the "newest" thread.
I like the looks of some of these Chris. I'll be looking forward to the individual postings. The Julia Mamaea (I think) looks most interesting to me.
Awesome denarii. I would have loved to pick one up but the only denarii at the coin show was at was 100+ dollars. I mean they were awesome but I couldn't afford them. The Hadrian is especially awesome
ok, here is the sestertius. looks like... caracalla 198-217 ad (all the attributions of this coin i've found online have said 215). orichalum sestertius rome mint rev: aesuclapius with staff, serpent (looks like dolar sign!), globe right, telesphorus left (barely visible). ric 538 (a?) 30mm 19.1 g rough, but i kind of like it...feels nice in hand, good and chunky. paid 20 bucks for it, looking around online a bit...that was probably a pretty ok deal...totally worth 20 bucks to me at least. please correct my attribution if i'm wrong!
here's a denarius i got for 25 bucks.... julia maesa, 218-222 ad denarius, rome mint (? not sure about this) o: ivlia maesa avg r:saecvli felicitas, felicitas with cadeuceus sacrificing over altar. 20mm 2.6 g ric 272 WAY off center on the reverse, but nice details. the details on julia are very good. somewhat concerned about those greenish spots. thought it was BD on a debased coin...but the spots wont budge to fingernail or toothpick. should i do anything or all good?

And the green looks to be just copper, not BD. Silver doesnt usually get BD unless its a fouree or very debased.
Nice haul of coins. Ancient coins are fun aren't they? You're holding a piece of history in your hands. And SteveX that picture you posted looks so wrong next to your avatar. Look at where the kids eyes are focusing on.
here it is vlaha, with his isle of man "crazy legs" buddy..looks like it is pretty similar to you avatar coin?
ok, here's this one.... gordian iii 238-244 ad o: IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG r: FORTVNA REDVX, fortuna with cornucopia and rudder. ric 210 22mm 2.9 g looks like it it was "doubleish" struck somewhat. anyone know where this was minted?
Wowwww Chris what a haul, i love coin show's to dig around find stuff like this, dicker with the price is the fun part...great group....
thanks eng! well, here's my first antoninus pius....another 25 buck denarius. i didn't "dicker" much with these, the dealer offered the denari for 25 bucks each ...and i took 'em...i'm not a good haggler. antoninus pius denarius rome mint? o: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XVIII r: COS IIII, vesta holding patera & palladium, altar left 19mm 3.1g so i was reading on dougs page that these are dated (the xviii) starting in december of the year of his rule... http://www.forumancientcoins.com/dougsmith/acmpius.html so if dec. 138-139 was year 1, this coin is dec. 155-156...correct?
The Gordian comes from Antioch. You can teel from the style but the cuirassed bust from the rear is the tell. Martin
awesome coins, dude ... keep 'em coming!! => man, they look right at home on that infamous table o' yours!!
