I used to feel the same way, but then I got sucked into searching for key dates and better grades, and now I've sort of come around. The blank-faced AG/G examples that I saw as a kid did nothing for me, but XF or MS examples -- I don't mind looking at those any more. Still waiting for the Seated Liberty design to win me over, though.
It's funny how different series strike each of us in a different way. I couldn't care less about a Walking Liberty half and that is one of the most attractive US coins by most folks estimation. I would walk all over my momma for a seated coin. They just leave me speechless each time I hold one..... And I think this is exactly what makes coin collecting the perfect hobby. You can't do it wrong.
I can say I am not a fan of modern presidential coinage……Washington quarters, Ike’s, Kennedy’s, Roosevelt dimes, Lincoln cents, Jefferson nickels. I find them quite ugly when we compare them to their Liberty sisters.
I quit collecting anything from the mint in 2016 and ended all modern sets. I got really ticked over the Silver Eagle mess. About all I still collect are type coins with nice eye appeal and Bust coins. The money I have saved has gone a long ways with Bust half dollars.
I am not a particular fan of nickels...particularly Buffaloes or Jeffersons. Jefferson looks odd and Buffaloes have that weak strike making them so difficult to grade. For those reasons, I will likely not collect them any time soon.
