And it points out the value of having records and photos of everything you own. With good photos it is possible to match a circulated coin in at least some cases. Certainly if a pawn shop purchases a lot that matches a lot of your coins and the photos look right, you might be able to convince a court that they are yours or at least convince the cops to investigate the seller more. Without the photos or slabs, I'd agree - not so much hope.

Sorry about the loss. Like everybody else said, get the police involved.

BTW- Anybody else remember Reuben, and the screen name he used? Check out the link in Post #11.

Were the coins locked up in a safe? I don't want to sound nosy but I'm just curious to know if someone broke into or stole a small safe or if the coins were easily accessible.

Fortunately I do not have any coins in my collection that are really precious - but I think that, if I cannot have my collection "at hand", I would not collect. Bullion pieces, sure, keep them in a bank's SDB. But others ...

Teddy, I feel sorry about what happened to your family. Hope that you can at least get some of the coins back, or have an insurance that also covers coins.

the owner at my LCS told me they most often take stolen coins to the next city over to sell.

That is aweful. I am so sorry to hear this. I dont understand the thought process of some people. I hope you can get your collection back.

I hope he meant that the crooks take the coins to the next town over and not that THEY take stolen coins to the next town. :)

Sorry to hear of this. Jim makes a good point. How many people knew of the collection you and Dad possessed? And are your comings and goings well known? It's most likely someone close to you..........

  20. definer

    definer definitely....! LOL

Given the list of coins, I might enlist a trusted friend or two to help you watch both ebay and Craigslist for the coins. Also, since you have the list, take it to the pawn shops (after you file a police report) so they can be on the look-out for them. If you (or your Dad) do a few of the things mentioned here you may be able to get a few back - and who knows - maybe all.
