I suppose a good number of folks on this forum were brought into coins or back into coins by eBay, myself included. The SGS thing bothers me.
Somewhat off topic but you might appreciate this view from the (rather exasperated) seller's side of the listing: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/05/26/ebay_email_trauma/ Too much!
A coin weights 1 to 3 ounces to ship. The relevance of shipping an automobile weighing 3000+ pounds has nothing to do with this forum. Most coin sellers on eBay offer a lenient return privilege on coins which I use and have not been disappointed.
Howdy Al - Welcome to the Forum !! Yes, you can find a wide selection of almost any coin on ebay. And yes there are some highly respected dealers on ebay who sell some very nice coins for fair prices. The problem is - you, the buyer, have to know enough about coins and the sellers to be able to tell the difference and to know a good coin for a good price when you see one. Most people cannot do this and as a result they end up overpaying, buying problem coins or outright counterfeits. I don't care where you buy coins - a coin show, dealer's shop, auction or web site - if you don't know your coins & your seller you will be taken advantage of. Knoweldge is the key and your only protection.
Thanks for the kind welcome. Yes, knowledge is the key to building a nice collection. That is so true. It's really sad that many real coin shops have closed their doors. We have only one shop in my area and there primary sales are sports cards. The coin guy is one of the good old guys though.
