I recently obtained a copy of the Coin of the Year book as a free bonus along with anothe coin book I purchased. I was fascinated at the variety of categories and the winners each year. The awards began with the year 1984 and the book takes you to the 2015 selection. The awards are 2 years behind the issue date. 1984 award, for example, are for coins issued in 1982. When the awards began there were 6 categories and an overall winner. The coins can win more than one category. Most Historically Significant Most popular Most Artistic Best Gold Best Silver Best Crown And of course, Coin of the Year Later 4 more categories were added Best Contemporary Event Most Innovative Most Inspirational Best Trade Thumbing thought the pages, I discovered that I already own some of the Winners. I thought it would make an interesting thread to see who else might own coins from the various categories. I might even try to own at least one winner for each year or Best Silver, or some other combination. I was surprised to see how many United States coins were winners. More than a couple of State Quarters won. I highly recommend this book to any collector of World coins. Some of my winners 1984: Three awards, Most Historically Significant, Most Popular, and Coin of the Year 1991: Most Artistic 2001: Best Silver 2002: Most Popular 2003: Most Popular 2003: 2 Awards, Most Innovative and Coin of the Year 2008: Most Inspirational 2014: Best Silver What coins do you own that have won? Guess you got to get the book first. Let's see, 30 years and 10 categories each year. Maybe I could put together some type of list. I get back to you. Found it. http://www.numismaster.com/ta/inside_numis.jsp?page=coin-of-the-year-archive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coin_of_the_Year_Award
PCGS offers this as a Registry Set, for anyone interested. Several of the pieces are excluded because they can't be housed in any current PCGS holder.
More recent Krause-COTY awards can be found here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coin_of_the_Year_Award That list is in German, but I don't think the country names are that hard to understand. I am not really fond of the concept, primarily because the COTY award is almost exclusively for NCLT or collector coins. Christian
