I'm going to try to post one coin each day about something fun. Feel free to add to the thread with something related. For this thread, I thought I would do something that more folks could join in. To me, there was always something special about the US Civil War issue coins. 1861-1865 Please post what you have.
My apologies to @Garlicus for the duplicate coin image. I live in central South Carolina and am a lover of civil war history. The piece below is nothing spectacular by any stretch. I love it because it was dug up near a river in Columbia South Carolina in the late 1980's near a known union encampment. The fellow that dug it up was a friend of mine who has a passion for detecting military buttons. I traded him two fine cigars for this piece that I believe holds some genuine civil war history.
I don't want to duplicate any coins, so how about this related item? A Massachusetts Volunteer Uniform button. Found here in N. Illinois.
I find it interesting that the mint would even be minting proofs in the war years. There was a shortage of small change. You would think they would have been working on the shortage.
Don't have mine handy at the moment (out of town) so I'll just post this link......... http://earlycommemorativecoins.com/1937-battle-of-antietam-half-dollar/
[QUOTE="Randy Abercrombie, post: 3109906, member: 92655[/QUOTE] I like the character of that coin. Still a LOT of meat on it, too.
