The theory is that someone at the Mint was goofing around, because it happened to several denominations.
Remember,.it appears backwards. Check out the TS in CENTS. You can see the neck below and chin line between those letters. Next follow above the S and you'll see the lips and beginning of the nose.
This is the cent clashed with the quarter. Look for the head and neck of the eagle at the upper part of the reverse. The second set of images are the matching quarter. The clash shows around the eagles neck.
Thanks. The last two were both graded by ANACS. The cent is AU-50 cleaned. I cant argue. It was cleaned. The spots give it away. The quarter is EF-45. I feel it would grade AU-50 today but it's happy in the ANACS holder.
Just noticed the marks in the field... still looks AU to me but very nice for a 45! I'm gonna go take a look at MS examples on heritage; curious if the stars were generally struck sharp on these. Seems like they wore flat pretty quick once into XF.
