Uh, how did you find out? Uh, I mean.... just kidding Mr. FBI, Mr. Secret Service Man. Um, what coin?
Absolutely great photos of such rare coins. Hey Speedy! How about a coin with a BC before the date. Not after because it is proper to put AD after the date but BC goes before the date. Now a coin, any denomination, with Ceasar on it and a BC date.
I don't know if I could do that or not Carl---first I would need some photos of some coins and a few coins with the AD and BC on them. Speedy
Speedy: ? ? ? ? Didn't you realize that he was kidding? If there is a date of BC it has to be fake! How can you know that the date is say 4BC......... before it happens?
And on that note - why in the name of all that is numismatically rare, would you send 10 of these coins to the US mint to authenticate? Wouldn't you just try your luck with one to start with? Did they seriously not know anything about them? Did they have NO clue that they would be confiscated? I just don't get it. Wasn't the first one confiscated before the mint agreed to monitize it? I just don't get it... I wonder if they're just sitting at home saying to themselves "what was I thinking????"
I think they knew all along what would happen and that they wanted to sell the coins. But since they knew that would never be possible without the coins being confiscated and them possibly getting in trouble - they decided to turn them in and fight the battle in court - without getting trouble.
i think the people with the double eagles probably thought they could get same deal as last one sold. half theirs/ half the mints. not sure i would have turned over all 10 tho. who knows? they may have the rest of the roll held back. i'm not sure i could have kept the secret for so long. i would be wanting to show the coin to my friends..
I am wondering about the person who purchased the last one prior to this sale. How must he/she be feeling. The value of that coin has diminished dramatically if these 10 go into mainstream collecting.
Anyone with knowledge of the history of the original seizure knew. And yes there is at least one more, probably 5 more, still out there. It was fairly well known years ago that Izzy had at least 25 of the coins. (Issy told the SS that he only had 9 and told them who they had been sold to. The SS eventually confiscated all 8 coins and announced that they had accounted for all of "stolen coins". Their 8 and the Farouk coin. A year or so later Eliasberg acquired his coin, and requested that he be allowed to keep it so as to keep his collection complete. The government refused and confiscated the tenth of the nine coins. Any guesses where the Eliasberg coin probably came from? My bet is Izzy sold it.) So far they have accounted for 20 of them and there is a photograph of a 21st specimen that hasn't been "rounded up yet. The 1931 Standing Liberty Quarter and the 1933 Washington have been long time myths with no really credible sightings. While the 1964 Franklin COULD have been struck since the dies probably existed in late November of 1963, I don't believe they were ever struck. (Although it is possible they did strike some to ave a stokepile on hand once the year changed. The country was in the midst of a coin shortage and they would not want to have had any delays in shipments while they waited for 1964 coins to be struck. I know they do this today but I don't know if they did back then.) I do not believe the 1895 dollars were ever struck. The original mint records do show 12,000 dollars being struck in 1895, but the entry is flagged with a note stating that they were dated 1894. The 1964-D dollars were struck, and that mint employees were allowed to acquire examples. I also believe that a few coins do still exist. At least two recognized dollar specialists have said to me that they have seen examples that they believe were genuine unaltered coins. There are 1999 non-state quarters, but they are counterfeits. In very early 1999 there were reports of a couple traveling up the east coast paying for their meals with rolls of quarters. Nice new 1999 eagle reverse quarters. The state quarters were just coming out and no one knew the 1999's didn't have eagle reverses. (I have to admit this is from news reports, I've never actually seen one.)
I had a good friend that collected coins for years---before he died he would tell me stories and such about coins that he had seen or friends of his that had seen rare coins---once he told me about a friend that had seen 10 1933 $20 Gold pieces....so I had posted here a few years back that I thought that down the road we would see about 10 come to light..... What about the possibility of 1964 dated coins struck on clad planchets or 1965 and 1966 coins struck on silver planchets? My understanding is that the US minted 1964 dated coins on silver planchets through 1966 while the mint was putting the new clad coins into circulation Seems to me that there could have been some wrong planchet strikes in this process.
That has been some found----IIRC there has been Quarters/dimes/and halves from those years struck on the wrong planchets. I'm not sure how many have been found----I have heard of a good many but they don't seem to come to light much. Speedy
1964 coins struck on clad planchets do exist, I've seen some. I have also seen 1965 coins struck on silver. I do not believe there are any 1966 coins struck on silver. They stopped striking the 1964 dated silver coins by very early 1966 and did not begin striking the 1966 dated coins until very late in the year so there was no overlap in production and they were seperated by at least 6 months.
I would add one thing to that Conder, I just remembered that there is a 1977-D Half Dollar struck on a 40% half dollar planchet....there might even be some dated 1971-D but I can't find a listing of that one. A 1977-D 40%'er was sold in the April 2005 ANA National Money Show, on April 7th....it was lot 674 and it sold for $9,200 http://www.bowersandmerena.com/auctions/lot_detail.aspx Speedy
