As for price drops in US Mint Sets, you state: "The 2004 clad proof set, for example, was valued around $70 in 2005 but can now be bought for around $9." Aftermarket value, which is what you are quoting has little to do with what the mint sells these for which happened to be $22.95. Then you turn around and suggext perhaps a more expensive yet stable alternative in Silver Proof sets? In most cases, even those sets can be found for cheaper than US Mint Issue price yet are costlier to the collector at the outset. The REAL problem with CnClad Proof and Uncirculated coin sets is in the "volume" which the US Mint produces and, of course, that "volume" is directly related to "Orders Received".
