I give 2's and halfs as tips as well.
but I also like spending them

I actually get more looks when using a half dollar than a 2 dollar bill... oye.

I gave one lady a half dollar at Target, and she had to look at it to read its value first...
another time I gave a 2$ bill to someone and she said "ohh nice! I love getting these" so that was cool.

I too like to spend 2's, Ikes and halves. :D

Clem - If you can - you should use some of those two's on vacation in a foreign place. Should make for some interesting reactions - just hope they don't think you are passing funny money. I hope it works out that the vacation fund stays as such!

Still have not found a roll of Madison dollars yet. The banks around here show little interest in getting them after their experience with the first 3. The few banks that had some of the presidential coins got them back after people went through them.

I took a Washington dollar to work to show off. It truly amazed me how many people took the time to look at it and ask "what is it" Most thought it was a quarter. I probably showed this coin to at least 10 people and only one person said they had even heard of it. Not sure about this persons honesty

    Very interesting and pertinent comment!!!

IF you are going overseas and I can only talk about Europe, Africa or Asia. Don't know about South and Central America..

If you are going there, and you just really want to distribute American money (for whatever reason...) - stick with bills. Overseas, it is very easy to exchange American bills for "real" money. Coins are much more difficult to exchange. In fact, from practical experience, I was never able to exchange coins in Africa - bills were ok, but coins - no.

If you really want to throw American money around in a foreign place, I would strongly suggest the $2 bill (or any other bill). Then the person can get local money back if they don't want to become a coin collector.

I won't even mention Africa, but I worked for over two years in England as a mid-level IT guy. I know that several of my IT colleagues were living in one-room apartments. And these were IT guys. I don't even know how much the servers at the local pubs were making.... But I know they want MONEY not some smart a** guy giving them a fancy coin as a tip that they can't use.. I guess it's all a part of the idea that Americans are clueless.

OK. So what's the ramble about? Give the people something they can use and convert easily.

Everyday my youngest son takes four half dollars to school to use as lunch money. He's been using them for four or five years now. I'm sure the lunch lady will remember him.
My oldest is in high school and refuses to take them, only worthless fiat paper will do for him. I think he's too embarassed to use halves.

If it's worthless does he still get fed? Or does he come home every day hungry and retaining the currency he brought with him?

Food (yes, I had to say it) for thought. ;)

Dollar coins yes. The others, no. None of the banks stock Halves or Deuces.

Don't spend 'em... The banks don't get that much for circulation here... In the last year I have managed to buy every half the bank has and that equals about $150.00 in halves that I have hoarded.

Don't see to many deuces so those get hoarded too...

As for dollars, the bank hasn't gotten in a single Ike, Susan or Sac....

I have been known to spend halves and dollar coins on occassion... but my legacy are two dollar bills. I use them every day at school-- I even have some "regulars" who ask for them. I tell them no problem, but only if they promise to spend them. More often than not, we have designated "Annoy the cashier day." Whenever at the bank, I usually change my entire wallet to twos. Sometimes I have to see other banks (not my own) to get deuces. I think I'll ask my HSBC to order some.
My favorite reactions ever were: a few weeks ago at Staples, I gave the girl two 2s and a one(!). She yelled across the store to ask if "we take these." The other was at Madam Tussaud's in Manhattan. The girl started panicking, and put her own two dollars in the till and kept it.
Yes, it is tempting to tell the cashier that the halves are one dollar coins.

    Howdy all,

    Nice thread.

Years back, the casino at Sault Ste. Marie, MI decided to demonstrate to the locals their economic impact on the local economy. They paid everyone with $2 bills. It made quite a statement.

    peace,

Everytime i try to spend my halves, they won't take them. The cashier always tells me I have to take them out of the plastic PCGS holders first. Whatever.

I usually have some of each of the above in my pockets, and I spend them quite often. It is amusing to observe the reactions, and oftentimes it develops into an opportunity for enlightenment.

I have seen that done with all three of these uncommon denominations, but the $2 is most popular in doing this.

I had a former sailor tell me the city where they were based was complaining about sailors on leave. Someone at the Navy got the idea to pay the sailors all in 2 dollar bills. It shut the community up -quick-. They did not complain again.

I have seen a quite a few of the twos that are stamped with some groups logo as well.

I frequently spend halves. I don't see many dollar coins or two dollar bills. I'm not sure if it's because people are saving them or because they are unpopular.

I spend them all, but it is very difficult to get halves here.

I spend as many half dollars as I can. I spend them on any purchase of $10 and under. I buy a box of them and buy another after I've spent them all. I love the reactions, i love how some people are SO excited, some have to thoroughly read them, some have to call over their manager, and some kids are excited to 'buy them back' from the change drawer. The guy at my post office loves getting them from me to give back as change. It's fun.
