Of course coin collecting is a subculture to the mainstream. That is what is so great about diversity and our country. America holds the possibility for such prosperity that we can work past fulfilling basic human needs and aspire to satisfy lofty interests. I work with ten vastly different people and it is wild how we all come together to do what I call "hunt a bigger animal" together. But in our free time we take the fruit of our labors and head off in our respective directions. I crimp and save whatever scraps are left after paying bills, food and taxes and buy rare coins. One guy is into building choppers and another dude is building a sick lowrider, both have single parts upwards of a grand each. Another guy is into clothes and traveling. The girls of course are into clothes and a pair of designer jeans can be 350.00! Or several thousand into beautiful tattoos. It isn't hard for me to turn the tables if they think coins are a head shaker. I have found that it is ok to talk about coins and coin deals, just show off lower end coins to stoke interest in future collectors instead of a huge gold coin and never talk about big deals as it makes people uneasy. And if that is the case, it's not anyones business and the secret makes certain coins more special to me. JMO
