Only a few people know besides my family. and all are ok with it. My daughter in law collects coins. And we have fun looking over each other's recent find. Beats doing coke. Well sorta.

My Dad and my brother have always taken an interest in my hobby and my Dad sometimes picks up a few coins for me as he runs across them at flea markets and so on. My wife is very supportive of my hobby and sometimes encourages me to buy when I'm undecided on a certain coin...so I get both. My step daughter has an interest in world coins and has recieved some from a very generous collector and fellow CoinTalk'er. She's very proud of her growing collection. I have only told a few of my co-workers of my hobby and they listen with interest but I can tell it bounces right back off of their heads because they cant imagine spending $400 dollars for a dime. I havent gotten any strange looks yet...I'm careful who I talk to. Im not crazy....I'm an addict!!!!

30 years? I'm only 15 and I've made over 1.5 grand on ebay in the past year buying and selling coins (mostly morgan dollars). Well, people are always saying a younger mind takes in knowledge faster and holds on to it better. Whatever :D

What I usually get from my friends is the look of "How and why do you know about this stuff ?".

My other hobbies include a drag race car, street rod, and a harley.
Those coupled with me quoting things from The Discovery Channel and The History Channel, leaves them trying to figure out what really makes me tick.

Oh well, I'm just me and I'm cool with that.

Is that any crazier than spending $5,000 for a Rolex watch that doesn't tell time any better than a $10 watch or $10,000 on a diamond?

Good for you. Just so happens my mind works just fine.

I NEVER sold coins for all of those years because I NEVER wanted to. Some of us just happen to enjoy the hobby in itself and that goes well beyond Morgans.
My collection spans from Colonial to present and is always growing. I like the history aspect and some day I'll make a nice profit on them but I ain't dead yet.

Don't think you know too much kid. I've probably forgotten more than you know like so many of the other "old timers".

Coin collecting seems to be a very rare hobby at the bottom of the world so no one looks at me sideways when i tell them. In fact when we changed our coinage last year it seemed that half of the country want to start collecting but now it has come back to being just the true beleivers!

Yeah I dont do this for profit either. Much to the dismay of my family. I suppose maybe someday. I do it for the joy and the challenge.

Of course coin collecting is a subculture to the mainstream. That is what is so great about diversity and our country. America holds the possibility for such prosperity that we can work past fulfilling basic human needs and aspire to satisfy lofty interests. I work with ten vastly different people and it is wild how we all come together to do what I call "hunt a bigger animal" together. But in our free time we take the fruit of our labors and head off in our respective directions. I crimp and save whatever scraps are left after paying bills, food and taxes and buy rare coins. One guy is into building choppers and another dude is building a sick lowrider, both have single parts upwards of a grand each. Another guy is into clothes and traveling. The girls of course are into clothes and a pair of designer jeans can be 350.00! Or several thousand into beautiful tattoos. It isn't hard for me to turn the tables if they think coins are a head shaker. I have found that it is ok to talk about coins and coin deals, just show off lower end coins to stoke interest in future collectors instead of a huge gold coin and never talk about big deals as it makes people uneasy. And if that is the case, it's not anyones business and the secret makes certain coins more special to me. JMO
