HELLO Collectors-Any out there AHH come on I know there is more of us out there who are not too shy to tpye......:rolling:
I enjoy this hobby for so many reasons. My wife tolerates it quite well, she too is into spending instead of collecting. My son is now into collecting also. I really don't care much for showing my coins to non-collectors. I try not to, but I always feel I go way over their head quickly. As simple as I try to keep it they keep asking questions and it happens. This hobby is much more than complex than a non-collector would ever imagine unless you live with one. Then at least the passion is understood.
TRUE TRUE Mr. Coin Lover.....I am glad I have a wife who has been in banking for 30 years....it was ahile for her to understand my collection....but now she is into it and I let to refer to it as Our Collection....or as a friend of mine say "The Houston Collection" hahhaa PS See Kevin K (friend) I refered my collection the way you say it
I was up last night just lurking around online.......and read that coin colectors will almost double by 2015....can you imagine the cost of coins.....they will jump up in $$ yeah for us now who collect....
That's a big part of it for me, too. In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out -- why in the world do I find taking a 1/2-hour to go through a few rolls of coins in the evening relaxing? Once I can figure that out, perhaps I can explain it to others!
See, now I thought it would more then likely be the opposite of that... Where did you read this exactly? It's not like it was years ago, collectors are a dying breed. When I was a kid, everyone had some sort of coin and/or stamp collection growing up but now it's all NintendoDSs and PlayStations. Coins are doing pretty good, but you can't give away stamps anymore. Don't get me wrong, I hope you're right, but only time will tell.
I've asked both my kids (both teenagers) if any of their friends collect -- neither of them are aware of anyone in the world that collects (other than me).
Sholom: HAHAHAAA same deal here my twenty year old no interest except in girls My 15 year old does not care except for PS3 gaming.....hahahaaha
My mom has a collection she no longer adds to my grandfather collected my brother collects random stuff and my best friend gets me coins.
Well, I wasn't expecting my _own_ kids to have an interest necessarily -- but I was surprised that, as hard as they tried, they couldn't think of a single other person in the world who collected. That said, I might say, my daughter is interested in the state quarters. But absolutely not interested in anything else. She calls everything else "boring". And she likes it for the geography and art. (So, e.g., the quarter with the nail polish on it, is one of her favorites). I was toying with the idea of getting her a cheap whitman folder for cents . . . I dunno . . . between her texting and facebook and etc., she doesn't have a lot of extra time for other interests . . .
I can relate Houston...my wife tells me on a regular basis I am the supreme geek, that I'm an old man (I'm 31, same as her) and that a buffalo nickel is still only worth 5 cents if you stick it in a vending machine. My kids are more forgiving, they are young. When they are teenagers I'm sure I'll reign with the geeks. My 3 year old has the most enthusiasm for coins. I let him play with my pocket change and a jar and he has a blast. He'd like to play with the other ones too, but I keep em in a fire safe. I collect pretty much for the joy of it, I don't care that my statehoods are AU instead of MS. I don't have anything slabbed but I do like airtites. I would like to see my collection prove viable for my kids if none of them embrace the hobby though. I just think of it like a treasure though. It's fun to discover, and it's fun to hunt. I like searching bankrolls and I think someday I'd like a metal detector. I play around cleaning junk coins to help me tell what's the real deal and what's doctored. I'm starting to come out of the U.S. shell and look at world coins. It's very overwhelming. I don't see the excitement going away, but I see it getting harder to find a thrill. I tell my wife this beats scratch-off tickets hands down. I don't hang out at the bar and I don't go to the strip club. I pester bank tellers and hang at the coin shop. She still picks on me. She accepts it though, thank goodness.
I hoarded as a child, I was more selective in my teen years, I quit during my early 20's then picked it back up in my middle 20's. Then I learned there was other numismatic literature than just the redbook. I have loved the hobby ever since I started. I haven't always done the right thing or collected the best pieces, but it takes real time to learn what is a quality piece and will be worth something years down the road and what is just filler that you are throwing good money after bad into. I love this hobby, even though my wife thinks I am crazy for spending money to get money, and my co-workers think I'm crazy. I could try to explain it to them, but they'll never get it. The closest I come to other collectors is during my Wed night poker game where several of the customers from the local shop meet up to b/s and play cards. I wouldn't have it any other way.
My wife laughs at all the time I spend roll searching. "Your not going to drag your coin stuff out again tonight are you? She just likes to tease me and is understanding about my obsession. She used to be a bank teller and every day I would ask her what she found me. The tellers she worked with keep a lookout for anything of interest and email me when new coins come in. They can't order any of the new cents or the Puerto Rico quarter for some reason. My parents were into collecting coins in circulation, but they are unsure about paying for coins. They give me coins every year from their collection for my birthday. Last year I got 51 cents (1910 Canadian large cent and a 1935 walking half). I tell my friends at work I got 51 cents and they don't understand. I thought it was a great present, how often do you actually get a gift that is actually worth anything? I hope someday I will get my mom's 1915 $2 1/2 Indian Head. I have a friend at work that has been collecting for a long time. We talk about coins at every break and go to coin shows together.
This is great......we all can relate....one way or the other...that is why it is the HOBBY OF THE KINGS.....hahahahahaaa
This is so refreshing to read these posts to find out I'm not such a nut for wanting to spend hours looking at coins, getting bank rolls and searching them, etc. I don't have the $ to buy slabbed coins, but look for the best I can find in change, etc., and buy a few pieces on Ebay and the coin shop. I just got a SWEEEEEEET deal though. A old friend of mine I just saw again, and he now owns an arcade that still uses quarters and not tokens. So, he agreed to let me sort through all about $500 worth of Quarters a week, and some of his other coinage, if I would roll the other coinage. No problem. So far I've filled 8 of the 9 holes I had in my state quarters collection, picked out some nice AUs, found one silver dime, and 3 dimes with die crack errors. Can't wait until the next load!!! bob
bobbeth87...sweet deal you got.....I get to go thru firefighters boot drive change....and made a deal with them to buy what I like...from them....also I must roll them too....have fun looking... fellow coin nut, Neal
