I have a prop newspaper from that movie I picked up for my son in 1997 from Disneyworld (or was it Universal?).
Unfortunately, I got it back a few weeks later when he died unexpectedly.

Ha Ha Ha go to 00:58 of the movie and pause it. Then look near the top of the print out and they have typed in there a 1974 $20 St. Gaudens MS-63 with a value of $75,000. That is too funny. Also before that they show someone putting the coin in backwards in the coin flip. It just goes to show you that the devil is in the details. lol

I can't remember title of the movie, but I remember some rich guy gives a homeless man a penny, and the homeless man looks at the penny and gets super excited and later on you find out that the penny that was given was a 1909-s VDB

Heellloooooooooo Mr. Wilson .... I can still hear that. I have to say it's a classic show -- I grew up on that. I think he collected stamps as well as coins.

Maybe you are referring to the movie 'UHF', with Weird Al, and Michael Richards? Rich guy gives a bum a penny, but it is explained as being a 1955-D Double Die, worth thousands. Stupid movie, but Michael Richards was a riot in it.

You know, while flipping through channels the other day, I saw a show or movie (not sure which) that had a segment about finding a morgan dollar. It was written by complete non-collectors, it seems. They referred to a mintmark as a "proof-mark" and the dollar had the mintmark doubled, but it wasn't like normal doubling. It was pretty much a D next to a D. Looked ridiculous, almost like " DD " but just one was a little higher up. I've never seen doubling like that. Also, this 'rare' coin was worth an even $100,000 according to some fake online auction or price site. And some dealer offered them $900 for it. It was a woman and I think her daughter. Anyone know what I was watching? I switched channels after a few minutes.

Another Dennis the Menace episode that aired in 1959.

Mr. Wilson schemes to get a Morgan Silver Dollar offered as a paper drive prize to Dennis. The woman that is giving the silver dollar prize doesnt realize it's the ultra-rare 1895 Morgan (880 proofs only known). It's interesting that the coin Mr. Wilson is holding in the photo does have a mirrored (proof-like) finish. I know it's only TV, but can you believe how he's holding it?

After trading Dennis and Tommy two paper dollars for the 1895 Morgan Silver Dollar, Mr. Wilson gets a case of the guilts and ends up donating the the "full value" of the coin to the charity ... $600.

Can you believe that in 1959, the full value of an 1895 Morgan was $600?
The value today is somewhere around $50,000

By the way, I wonder how many kids in the late 1950's and early 1960's were introduced to (and/or learned about) coin collecting from the Dennis the Menace TV show?

I remember watching a few episodes of Dennis the Menace back then, but I never realized that Mr. Wilson was a coin collector. The person who got me interested in coins was my grandmother, who realized that the silver in the circulating coins at the time would eventually be worth more than the coins' face value.
