I am looking for a good quality old school wooden coin cabinet with drawers with velvet squares for my collection. Do you have any store or workshop that have coin cabinets (preferably in Europe). Many thanks!
Try Alberto Zecchi https://www.albertozecchi.com/shop or Abafil https://www.abafil.com/it/42-numismatica
I have an unfinished project that I have not had time to complete, its antique. I was going to replace the red velvet with green baize. The drawer knob pulls were going to be replaced with scrap silver Threepenny coins.
@daveydempsey Can't wait to see the final out come. @Basileus Antialcidas While coin cabinets such as the one Dave is working on are a nice way to display your coins, they also provide very little if any protection from theft or other disasters (fire, water). You may show your collection to a trusted friend, but if they tell someone in casual conversation then someone might find out and your collection is compromised. Also check with your insurance agent. With something like this your policy might not cover theft. Take pictures of your collection and store it in a nearby bank safety deposit box.
I had to look in my dictionary to find what "baize" is. For those as uninitiated as I, Baize is a synthetic material used to replace felt.
The real fun is in building your own... Here's my thread telling you all about it. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/dr...top-worrying-and-built-a-coin-cabinet.369939/ I suppose, depending on where you live, you might worry about natural disaster. And whom you spend time with, theft. However, if you have a safe environment I strongly recommend it as it's very rewarding
Check out coinsofbritain.com under his drop down “coin cabinets” He specialises in antique cabinets and I believe he ships. I use Abafil myself as they are real quality but I have a wooden cabinet for world coins which deflects from my collection which is secure. The Dave cabinet looks like it is going to end up as a fabulous piece of furniture. I have a very inauspicious 20 tray Victorian cabinet that was rescued from a skip (dumpster) that was used by Moore the Medallist a famous British engraver. This a hobby with so many facets….
I have left most of my coins in the box they came in and label the contents. I have a cardboard box that I had used for magazines that I put those boxes in. I have a box for every year with a list of contents tape to the bottom of the lid. They boxes are secured with deadbolt doors going into the building they are kept and then another deadbolt in the door to the room they are stored in. The building is surrounded with a chain link fence and an 2 year old Australian Shepherd and a 4 year old cat inside the building. Once someone gets into the building, they won't be getting out. My dog would tear his arm off. If she doesn't the Pit Bull will. Oh yeah, the building, contents, and especially the coins are insured.
Mine is a 6'x3' Sanctuary 2 phase electronic safe. They can steal my wife but will have a heck of a time taking the safe, ha! Enjoyed the post, thanks and good luck.
Some numismatists have successfully adapted antique dental cabinets for storing and displaying their collections - they're pricey but distinctive
I bought a fairly large 28-tray cabinet from Peter Nichols a long time ago (http://coincabinets.com/) but I now prefer Abafil trays. Abafil make a cabinet which holds 20 trays quite nicely, though it is pricey. I got a nice small 3-tray Swann cabinet in a DNW auction (www.dnw.co.uk) and they regularly have cabinets. I remember seeing that another UK-based dealer had a fairly large selection of antique mahogany cabinets sometime last year but I can't recall the name or find him now! Ahhhh - found him - http://www.coinsofbritain.com/pages/coins/coins.asp?cat=11 Unless you can pick up the cabinet, shipping is likely to be expensive! ATB, Aidan.
I'm a tool maker by trade....Many many years ago.......My first tool cabinet was one of the below examples....They're still not that expensive even now, which is a surprise.....For sure these can be transformed into something nice!?...Just a thought.... https://www.rr-99.top/products.aspx?cname=engineers+tool+box&cid=6
I thought about getting a coin cabinet. Then I thought about fires and burglars. Then I opted against a coin cabinet
My safe is fire proof and water proof. I hope I have enough time to enter the dial numbers before an earthquake drops it down under the house.
