All of you are great! I am getting a sharpening of my abilities. When something is mentioned, I grab the coin and head for the scope and camera to see what might be there. I have looked at these coins as hard as I have any,no matter whether problem or no problem, and I realize if I focus on it, I can do an improved job at evaluating it. Thanks, Jim
Whoops! I misread the intro, thought it was presented as a definite "problem" coin. Will need to rethink my opinion.
Ok, all bets are in, Here is the coin. PCGS MS-63 Rattler. This was the first commemorative I purchased after an 1892 AU Columbus half. It was purchased from Teletrade in 1987 when we received a printed catalog by mail and then bid by touch-tone telephone ( cat's-meow). There were snipers even then. Granny paid the $225 back then ( even slabbed by an upcoming company called PCGS), but that was the hayday it seemed for Commemorative halves, and then the bottom fell over time, I have been considering picking up some of the scarcer ones as I think they have very artful designs and low populations. But to each his own path. Several of the links to comparative coins did not have the same 1935/34 reverse, and typically they run 50-100% more. The one link for the 2/08 auction was a great deal! CDN gives a single Boone type coin @ about $115 MS-63 ( probably 1934 or 1935P), a PDS set of 1935 is about $350, but the PDS set for 1935/34 is about $850 ; the D and S single is more than the P because only about 2000 of each of those were issued. Granny would have been happy to consider a $175-185 figure as fair. Hope you enjoyed the exercise. My answer obviously on the value is my own estimate, and everyone would have to consider their own circumstances. Thanks for looking! Jim
Great thread, Jim. I got here too late to participate but I always learn something from your posts. Bruce
Nicely done RedTiger! way back in post #7! Jim, this was another fun thread. I liked that you went with an early commem coin as well since it might not be that common to everyone. Hope you'll roll out more threads like this when you are up to it. Cheers!
They are fun to do, and as I mentioned, I think they have really improved my abilities to observe and grade, as I have the advantage of having the coin in hand and can see what others notice in a photo and then see what it actually is. The next few days are really packed with family and rentals needs, but then I can spin up another of Granny's. Maybe Peter can give credits to the closest assessment Just kidding Peter! Jim
