If you want to split hairs, thousands and thousands of us should be in the Federal Pen. Mercury plating cents, drilling a hole in a coin for a charm or key fob, putting coins on railroad tracks, making oblong cents at the amusement park are just a few ways we have broken the law. This could be one way to help reduce the unemployment rate.

    Yes, apparently we do.

Fraudulent : Obtained, done by, or involving deception, esp. criminal deception

Cases involving the fraudulent alteration of coins are prosecuted on a regular basis, whether it's painting No Cents nickels gold, later shaving silver from circulating coinage, or more recently altering $1 coins to create or exploit a market for "Missing Edge Lettering" error coins.

Or would you prefer we dealt with your original post?

Verb : Make a new supply or different form of (a product, esp. a book or record) available for sale.
Noun : A new issue of such a product

Unless the purpose is, specifically, to destroy the note and render it unfit to be used as money, and unable to be replaced, it's simply not a crime.
