I received a letter earlier today from the US Mint informing me that the certificate of authenticity accompanying my 2023 American Liberty silver medal was in error (the mention of coin rather than medal was used) and that they had (included in my letter) issued me a corrected certificate. Blown away........attention to such miniscule detail....like I hadn't noticed but who cares? I wonder what bean and paper clip counter caught that mistake. Anyway, for grins and chuckles, check this out on Ebay..... COA ERROR! 2023-P American Liberty Silver Medal 1 oz Proof Bristlecone Pine 23DB | eBay
I deal with Federal regulations in my work and deal with the regulators. If “paperwork” has a mistake, dependent on the seriousness of the error it will require a different response. Coinage is produced under an Act, which generally requires a specific response when a more significant error is recognized. A field action. To remain compliant, this amended document may have been requisite to make clear this was established as a medal and not legal tender produced under the Act.
In my world, it comes down to safety and efficacy. Could be the difference between a serious injury and death. So to the feds, money to correct is not an option. I’m guessing here but it boils down to calling something what it is. You can’t spend a medal but you can spend a coin. If a medal is misrepresented as a coin, someone might want to spend it.
$2799.79 for a bad certificate? Is it the mint trying to make up for the money they have to spend to correct their mistake? :-D
lol mine says the same coin specs. love it when something so trivial makes news! Doesn't even have to do with the "coin" oops metal! thanks good chuckle.
You mean to tell me I spent $1,500 under the "Best Offer" option, but the Mint is giving them away for free!!!!...sheesh!
