What a fun group and collecting pair! It's amazing to see how much coins can change ones life, creating long term friendships and bringing people together.
I don't know what they're talking about either @stevex6 but it's on my list to come back and take a real good look at what is going on with those flans, read all the posts carefully and figure it out.
We should mention that the Dattari-Savio plates are not photos but pencil rubbings. Photography of coins in Dattari's time was not as easy as it is today. @dougsmit - nice silver bar rubbing Digital cameras and printing have changed how we receive information. I like the two books I bought on cast bronze recently: Garrucci (first published in 1885) and Haeberlin (first published in 1910). The first used hand sketches. The second uses pictures, but I think some were pictures of castings of the coins. Now we can upload pictures of our treasures to web sites like this. The trick is to find one that will last a long time (and not a long time in computer years). I liked your etching pic and found an elephant coin pic. http://elephantaday.blogspot.com/2012/02/elephant-no-126-frottage.html I like my elephant coin better.
