Wow, fantastic score for two of my favourite CT homies!! (congarst)

Ummm, you dudes scored "80" Alexandrian coins?! (is that correct?)

Man, you dudes are runnin' with the big dogs!! (that must have been quite expensive?) ... congrats, either way

I loved all of your posted examples, but I do agree that TIF's Serapis is a definite "winna-winna"

I have a very humble A-Pius example showing serpent with Serapis' head ...

Oh, but obviously not nearly as sweet as TIF's new addition (congrats to both of you guys!!)

=> I can't wait to see more of those amazing additions!!

    :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Yep. 40 drachms each  (well, 40 drachms for Z, 39 drachms and one diobol for me)

Oooh how I love your Serapis-Agathodaemon riding a horse! I bid so hard on a similar coin recently but it was an ex-Dattari and bidding was fierce. There were many bidders above me after I dropped out.

@TIF @zumbly .. I enjoyed riding along with you guys while you made that score and divvied it up! I felt I was right there! It is apparent you two enjoy and trust each other. Is there something better than that? Congratulations on your coins; but, more congrats on your friendship.

We alternated picks, in two groups: the 10 Dattari plate coins and then the rest. I picked first and chose the Zeus Ammon :)

I am not surprised that you pulled this all off. And, I am thoroughly versed at modern communications/transportation. I AM amazed at the real LOGISTICS! receiving / picking / distributing literally half-way around the planet from each other! Congrats!

this group of coin collecting peeps brings this once pretty much solitary hobby to a new level..it's social now! and buying coins with a coin-friend.. remarkable! it reminds me of the human evolution thang... kinda.. we started out loners and now belong to a group. still hunter/gatherers but influenced by our peeps quite a lot and now part of a community. like beer drinkers going to the bar. i look forward to seeing what kinda brew your drinking tonite and what you think about this or that brew and your thoughts on the brew i drank yesterday..here's to ya peeps:vomit:(too much brew lmao i'm kidding with da smiley><)

Some interesting coins in that lot. I'm guessing splitting the cost made the price more reasonable?

Yes-- it lessened the risk. I think we both went into it assuming there would be many duplicates and we knew most would be low quality. The price we each paid brought the risk down to a level we could both live with even if there was little to nothing of high interest in the group.

Another thing to remember with this hobby is entertainment value. This whole process was very fun, and there are still many many more hours of enjoyment to be wrung from the coins-- even the ones I wouldn't have purchased as individual lots.

As always when I've bought a group, especially if some or all are not imaged, I tell myself I can sell the ones I don't want (part of the little lies we tell ourselves to rationalize the purchase). I'll probably hang on to most of my 40 :).

I got about halfway through your lead in and was feeling really guilty I did not bid on the Gemini lots I found interesting (not the A-Pi) because I assumed the average would be like the three you showed at the end. I migh have had I not spent too much already this year. I loved that Zeus head TIF took first. Then I came to the information that I found hilarious.
Understand I only have four A-Pi drachms. One of them is below. I would have been more than a little upset if the best coin in my lot was one I already had.

Moving on to Z's group: When I saw his Isis in temple I was amazed that it happened again but it turned out I was wrong. One of my four is a temple but has Serapis instead of Isis. Too close for comfort.

Since you have so many coins, I have a request. Of my A-Pi coins my favorite is this obol. It is high grade but that is not why I like it. I can't ID in to Emmett number but that could be because I am calling it a modius rather than a vase. What is odd? Alexandrian bronzes all have a tapered flan from being struck on blanks poured into cups. They almost all have the flat side on the reverse and the taper on the obverse. Do any of your hoard have this reversal? I have had this coin for a long time. You could not tool this feature into a low grade coin. What is going on here?

I'd be worried more except look at this coin CNG sold:

Given the curved sides, "waist" at the bottom, and foot I'd call it a vase. Modiuses (modii?) seem to have straight sides. As you probably know, the vase obol, per Emmett, was struck only in year 10 as was your coin. Emmett 1786.10, R5. Beautiful coin!!

Also, the modius is between torches (like the CNG obol). Your vase is not between torches.

All 80 of the coins in this lot have the usual arrangement: obverse on the convex side, reverse on the flat side.

[shrug] The flans were simply upside down when the coins were struck?

Are you thinking that it isn't a coincidence since the CNG coin (A-Pi obol with modius reverse) was also struck on an upside-down flan? I think I'd one more than N=2 to draw any conclusions :D. Have you seen many others? Should we start checking the orientation of all A-Pi obols? (My only two A-Pi obols, a sphinx and a hawk) have the usual flan orientation.)

Just to clarify something: Zumbly and I co-wrote the OP. The editorial comments signed "--Z" are his words, not me trying to be funny :)

The copied and pasted portions of our CoinTalk private conversation are essentially unchanged, with only a couple of edits to remove irrelevant information.

Harry Sneh and I used to do this and it worked out quite well.

I have tried working things out recently with a fellow Flavian collector and he refused. I just wanted to prevent hard feelings and help keep the hammer prices down for each other - he doesn't care about any of that and just wants the coin. So, I didn't even bid and let him have the coin.

Oh well, I'm OK with valuing friendship over coins.
